Ah this is so refreshing! I'm glad to see something completely different in the CS job ads sector. And Pentagon, Arlington, VA as a location? Oooff, every single one who grew up with X-Files would be excited about that!

I would even dare to bring up the Bill Gate's (yes that guy!) alleged talk in Saudi Arabia [1], which goes as something along these lines: "..if you’re not fully utilizing half the talent in the country, you’re not going to get close to the goal you have set for yourself..."

[1] Bill Gate's precedent was about the issue that is an order of magnitude more severe/significant than a drug testing: women's rights, but I find the analogy quite applicable and illustrative here

Yeah. Disaster Radio does not look like a "kit" at all. Not for "an average user" at least. I'd be cautious building and operating hardware that can potentially get me in trouble with authorities.

Still great general idea though, to build a solar-powered kit that's easy to setup and operate, a kit that makes sure there is a "plug-and-play" solution in case of a disaster (natural or not), kit that also delegates legal responsibility to the "creator"/manufacturer.

You have at least 15 years of experience and can't get an offer of 120K in Chicago? I don't believe that it’s plausible. Well, unless it's not a "high-tech" job you are talking about, meaning that your comment is not relevant to the article or discussion at all?

If you are a software developer (or data-scientist, or anything that qualifies as "high-tech"), it is very strange that after 15 years your skills did not appreciate or improved enough to qualify for a 120K offer.

Psychological problem suggestions, gentle nudges if you will, are inherently beneficial even if those generate a defensive response. Defensive response is a response! That response is a deliberate thought in itself, an analysis. In modern, developed societies, it seems that the only appropriate time to suggest therapy is when the following sentence includes a suicide hotline phone number, how crazy is that? the scale FB operates on is staggering! Human factor, while still present, is very low. Wonder what could have happened there. They don't usually release postmortems, right? (since the general service they provide to the masses is "free", meaning minimum obligating to reporting. Would be curious to read the postmortem, analysis of what happened.

The only note would be pricing? Margins look too low for the tech product? You need to sustainably acquire and maintain a very large user base in order to make it work, the larger the base the more expensive maintenance will be, can potentially be dangerous. Let me know if I'm missing something.

Software Development is one of the most aggressive industries that are out there. Tech evolves daily with major trends shifting monthly. It's extremely hard to keep up!

And it's extremely easy to become "part of the road" if you don't invest heavily in your professional development by studying the "steamroller". What if older software developers are just the road, modern tech "steamroller" is rolling over? There are quite a few percent of the bright and knowledgeable older software engineers, but what about the "average" ones? Ones who got tired, have families and just don't want to be bothered with making themselves uncomfortable by trying to "keep up"? What about those who were sitting comfortably a decade with the oldest tech you can imagine that was "current" in early 2000, and now wind has changed? It seems logical to assume that a job search for those is gonna be tough!

Also about bootcamps, Erik Meijer makes an interesting point about "amateurs in our industry", that people who live, sleep, and breath code for 20+ years should be able to comfortably retire near 40, meaning this problem we are discussing here should never be a problem to begin with.
