I wrote this a while ago, and, if anything, the conclusions in it are too weak.

Google Analytics isn't strictly necessary these days, and more and more marketers will pick up on that, I think.

It's one of the reasons why I point people to using Wordpress + SEO plugins like Yoast, which deal with most if not all of these edge cases automatically.

This is pretty good advice, though what we see more commonly is that Yoast is misconfigured (or not configured at all), which causes more problems than it solves. Another thing that happens is solutions like Yoast will throw lots of errors that actually don't matter because Yoast's goal is to drive interaction with Yoast. It's not always easy to make the distinction.

But yes, for a lot of people "just use Wordpress" is a good solution, and an attentive Yoast install can be super helpful!

Google Search: Surprisingly smart in some ways, surprisingly dumb in others.

And this sort of thing doesn't just make a difference in indexing, but also in other places like analytics – Google Analytics will see a page with a slash and no slash separately, for example, which makes it hard to get an accurate picture of what's performing.

We made a list of these factors here, this is #21 but maybe we should move it up! https://www.ercule.co/seo-content-performance/search-engine-...

Yes, a lot of companies try to use paid early, and not only do these leads not convert as well to revenue, they also requires continuous investment. The hard thing, but much better thing, is to invest in content and organic, but a lot of founders don't think that way.

I also wonder if early-stage marketers can get a lot of credibility / leverage in their organizations by focusing on product marketing.

Other random observation – a lot of marketers seem to not be able to figure out what works, and then the solution they offer is spending more money. (This isn't always a marketing problem, could be a product issue that the marketing team can't influence.)

My only concern about this is that a lot of the technologies identified as "adtech" on that diagram just... aren't:

* Vimeo

* Hootsuite

* LinkedIn

* UserTesting.com

Marketing != advertising. The overall point is really valid, but this is a dumb way to back it up.

It's bad enough to just take the ad-serving parts of the diagram he uses, which add up to hundreds of technologies (or use Ghostery on any news site).

Super, super offensive intro. Mark, have you been through watching a spouse or parent die of cancer? Note that those seeing this will have known this person for more than two years.

This is really interesting. Thanks for this comment.

So is something like Multipeer Connectivity Framework in existence mostly because it is a much weaker version of true mesh networking? (Or not mesh networking at all?)

Do you think weaker versions of mesh networking that don't solve the underlying problems could also be valuable?

I chose the word "addiction" pretty specifically - does it enrich the user's life? Uber does. (And you probably don't have a desire to use Uber for hours every day).

Social gaming (someone mentioned below) does, to a point, and then it's engineered to go way, way beyond that point.

It's complicated of course - and there's a spectrum - but I think a bad sign is if your architecture is intended to hack the reward systems of your customers.
