Do you plan on charging for this at some point? I've noticed my bandwidth costs are double due to the traffic coming to my site and the traffic my site generates to get the screenshot.

To grab the screenshots I'm using PhantomJS. The webapp itself is running on the Play framework though.

I just got it working with PhantomJS and I must agree it does look a lot better. The problem with external fonts is still there so I'll have to crack open QtWebkit to see if we can't fix that.

As for PhantomJS, I hadn't heard of it. I was originally rendering the screenshots with Selenium and the FirefoxDriver. They came out looking good, but performance was abysmal and when a page froze up I needed a mechanism to kill firefox manually.

Now I'm using Wordpress's Mshots service, but I'm looking at a couple of python tools to generate headless screenshots.

Yea, it's not quite polished just yet so you get the occasional failure to load a screenshot. I figured I'd gauge interest before dumping a bunch of time to clean up the edge cases.

I'm not sure how useful is for everyone else, but I always thought grabbing a screenshot of a url could be improved.

Although the project is still pretty young, liquibase(http://www.liquibase.org/) is a solid opensource project for not only managing schema revisions, but inserting seed data as well as abstracting schema structure from DBMS.

Nathan also does a good job of applying submitted patches quickly.

This seems like a very good analogy to present when you come across non-technical people with pie-in-the-sky requests. They don't know how to go about building the features they dream of, and I have no idea how to go about answering any of the questions you list above. If nothing else, we both realize that the programming isn't just trivial, and neither is the marketing.

I just got back from Chile and, while I can't speak for the government incentives, I was very surprised at how developed it was for a South American country. Santiago's metro system put anything else I've ever seen to shame.

The landscape was strangely similar to California except it gets colder as you go South, and warmer as you go North. And yea, the surf was pretty awesome too.
