How We Increased Our Twitter Following Over 5000% In 30 Days and Why It Matters

Hah. Its not that simple to just pull off. The js code snippet is part of the theme and so we have to restructure several things to selectively place it on certain pages and not others. As a developer I hate having interrupts come in so I dont do that to my guys. We put it in the queue, it'll get done this week.

I really appreciate the note. It is an actual person, not a bot that chats with each user but I actually agree with your perspective. It can be seen as intrusive. As the CEO, I'm making the executive decision to take the chat feature off the blog today. Thanks for helping improve our user experience!

I get why systems like that exists, I just dont understand how I got caught in that flag. If we are sitting in a coworking space and all come from the IP, does that flag us as a ring?

Funny enough, I not have 10x more karma points than I did before I posted this and I STILL CANT UPVOTE!!!

[dead] 13 years ago

I know it doesnt work because I click upvote and it doesnt assign any points while a friend sitting right next to me could do the same thing and assign points. Both he and I have under 100 Karma points

[dead] 13 years ago

I have other friends that have low Karma points and can upvote. Its definitely not a Karma threshold.

[dead] 13 years ago

I dont see a downvote, but same thing happens with me on an upvote.

[dead] 13 years ago

The reason I know is that I click upvote and it never assigns any points

[dead] 13 years ago

Lol, that seems to be an unintended consequence. I was just really confused.

I would first like to say, holy crap. I posted this early in the morning and went for a run, showered, came into work and just checked expecting only a couple of answers. I am really stoked to see so many people taking an active interest. Working on answering each post now.

I agree, life would be much easier if they provided import/export paths, sadly we have to hack our way around it. I have used other plugins for wordpress before, like backupbuddy, to accomplish the same thing.

I think he is more referring to the portability of content within Wordpress. If I am using a platform to manage content, I'd like to think that I could easily port that content wherever I want.

I guess that was a poorly phrased question. Auernheimer was convicted of "conspiracy to access a computer without authorization" so more specifically, is web scraping the same thing as "conspiracy to access a computer without authorization"?

Web scrapers look just like real humans, and its publicly available data, so when a website doesnt authorize web scrapers, how do you draw a legal differentiations?

There is no silver bullet for stopping web scrapers. If you just try to block User Agents or IPs, all you are doing is putting a small hurdle in their way. You have to employ a lot of different tools to be able to make the wall high enough that they actually stop trying to scrape you. Some of the key things you need to do are:

behavioral modeling - rate limiting, bandwidth restrictions, etc

identity verifications - make sure they are running the browser they say they are, allow google and other search engins by whitelisting their IPs, block others that are pretending to be google, etc

code obfuscation - make it hard for them to scrape your code. Change up the CSS, etc.

OR you can use an automated service to do all this for you. Check out www.distil.it. Full disclosure, I'm the CEO of Distil.
