I’d add that modern marketing isn’t really aiming for heterogeneity, but for eventually producing behaviorally homogeneous user clusters.Many product and tech choices today are about shaping user behavior so users become more predictable and therefore more monetizable. During this transition phase, the system tolerates (or creates) heterogeneity, but at the cost of complexity, friction, and inefficiency, which are mostly pushed onto users. In that sense, this is less about “the future” and more about engineering markets through data, with trade-offs that are rarely made explicit

Hey everyone I'm Angelo — I built HN Pulse because I read Hacker News every day and often miss good discussions while I’m coding or in meetings.

I wanted something super lightweight that just lives in the menu bar and quietly notifies me when stories are actually worth checking out — based on score, comments, or keywords.

Everything runs locally (no data leaves your machine). It uses the official Hacker News Firebase API and is built with Electron + JavaScript.

So far I’ve tested it only on macOS (universal build). Windows and Linux versions are generated but not yet tested — I’d really appreciate feedback if you try them!

I loved this area when I was at university. At the end of Computer Networking course I brought a project on based on https://www.isi.edu/nsnam/ns/

It was really fun expecially because it allows you to understand better all networking layers.

I did some tests about network topology to minimize lost tcp packs as possible, given different network traffics

I the last years I've mostly worked in the food delivery area. I built the an entire food delivery platform by rails and turbolinks adapters for mobile I also worked and made research about the application of dispatching algorithm, making one by my own

Really strange that how back-end developer you never had a use-case for Redis yet.

First you could check at

If you look at single data type you can see how redis takes care about complexity(indicating the Big O notation) of each single data structure and operations.

Many devs use it for caching but in my opinion is super nice for evil-write applications.

I think that microservice approach is good when you can share those services between many applications In most cases microservices can be the new premature optimization because you can start to lose the focus on the product itself and think about the the microservice as a product

I personally loved the first years of fb even if I never been a social network person.

Now I think that company ( in terms of fb product) should focus how to be still facebook of the first years with innovations.

When I switched from linux to mac it was just for the hardware, at time I bought a ibook g4 the most beautifull laptop that I have had, the battery in 2006 has a duration around 9 hours of coding. Recently when I think to back to linux the only my worries is the system update and the fact that I cannot test or compile any iOS app.

I think that people that read this news are not our potential customer :) Our culture is implicit in our It stack, we started really small and growing around of orders number with no following the current startup culture(that basecamp team doesn't like it ) We started small and stay still small.

I like this question. Well I can talk about my company. I'm the CTO of http://prestofood.it a small delivery food company based on Sicily. We started with fews resources and we made around 3.000 orders per month. We started from one city with a small team 2 developers. Here our initial configuration:

* Heroku 7.00 per month

* Rails app

* Android and iOS app developed with Turbolinks plugin.

Now we are in 3 other cities and we made a cms and backoffice to handle the orders workflow and we developed a printer system with raspberry-pi. Currently we are the biggest company of delivery food in the south of Italy. We have no investors

Why don't use HTML5 application cache with the manifest? At first look it do the same that you need:

* Cache css, js and images file

* Defined cached entries page ex index.html, show.html etc..

* Fallback Entries

I like ruby and rails, not just for the framework itself, but for what it was and it is for many developers.

I want to say thanks to DHH for his way to maintain the framework simple, despite to many PRs that try to make rails more complex.

Overall GitHub is a cultural place where anyone can improve his personal skills, expecially in computer programming, thanks to the huge code present on it. I have romantic vision of Github. For instance, guys from poor parts of the world can study great code with this site.

Yes it is a company with investors and probably it made some wrong decisions, and if we want we can choose other services, but today sorry for the repetition Github represents an open and huge cultural Hub.

Twitter is considering to allow message longest that 140, but I don't think that the problem is the character limit for the kind of interaction of twitter users. There are other problems not so big but that make the user experience not fluent for a simple app like Twitter.

Writing posts with more that 140 can potentially get many FB users, nevertheless TW should take care of the its current users. I notice many incoherences of the web app, for instance the top menu, on left where pop/up and navigation are mixed.

Second, the mobile app is very wired I receive notifications about message or followers that appears on my notification tabs randomly.

In conclusion, I love TW and I'm not a FB user, but I'm honest my twitter timeline is a bunch of Ads and I follow Twitter just because I love the concept of it.

I like the concept to use a single web socket with multiplexing/demultiplexing mode. It's very simple concept but rails yet give to its developers the 'right way', to set under control the number of connection of web sockets. Now each connection will use the same web sockets and every connections on the web page pass by it. This means that each service send message like: (service_A: requests)->(multiplexing) -> Web Socket -> (demultiplexing) -> Server

I lived a situation like yours, after I left from big consulting company, where you are in continuous contact with your your customer and other many people. I'm not introverts, I like to meet and chat with people and I've played many sports also as pro.

But after I decided to change my job, I went back to live with my parents in my city. I started to work at home. I'm honest I've made many mistakes, just for I had not experience. The results were just immediate:

* Do not discern work place and house

* Have no desire to go out. I remind that going out for me had become very hard, maybe for laziness, I don't know.

* Personal relationships very bad. Having relationships with friends or girl friend is not simple. If you stay all day at home with only your pc, you degrade your ability on cultivate relationships.

I've made similar choice to yours, I've took an office with my friend and many things are changed, I back to gym I start to meet many people each day. But I continue to work as remote position :)

Indeed the problem is not the remote work , the problem is your job location. In my experience, take an small desk in an open office or a room with a friend is a good choice, and it solved many problems for me.
