It is the goal of every business to maximise profits. As a business, it is your responsibility to price your products in a way that will yield the most profit.

This is how the article starts, and it might be somewhat off-topic, but I disagree. Plenty of businesses (at least privately held ones) have the goal of simply making enough for the owners to get by. Not to optimize for the absolute maximum. And why should they be responsible to do so?

This is off-topic, but I use the Firefox extension Foxy Gestures. When I draw a gesture on the featured website, a pop-up shows the gesture I'm drawing.

I have never seen that before. Is that some JS/CSS trickery? Or a bug in the extension?

I'm pretty sure that to upload your code to GitHub, you have to agree to their terms of service, which potentially give them all sorts of rights to your code. This creates a special relationship between you and GitHub that is separate from the license you assign to your project.

I think so, yeah. Although orpheus is also all right.

Do yourself the favor of joining Red and download your music in flac or mp3 made from high-quality sources instead of YouTube. The interview is not hard to pass if you prepare for it.

I really like the UI! I use Firefox with Sidebery and the top tab bar hidden via userChrome.css, which is kind of a hassle. Zen supports that kind of layout out of the box.

I'm very happy to see a new modern browser not based on Chromium. Will definitely test drive it to see if it's worth switching to.

A Czech here with a small correction. Countries often have a long and a short version of their name. For example "Federal Republic of Germany" aka "Germany".

We didn't change the name, rather we adopted "Czechia" as an official short variant, since we previously didn't have one. So both are correct.

Otherwise I agree with your point. This is just a bit of a pet peeve of mine.

This was already tried with the Do Not Track header. Websites simply ignore it. They don't want an easy way to get the user's preference. Because they know that most users would set it to decline tracking. Sites would rather annoy every visitor for the chance that they click 'accept'.

I installed this flatpak-packaged Jagex Launcher and RuneLite, and it works flawlessly on Linux. It does run in Wine, but the package takes care of setting that up.

It is seemingly somewhat officially sanctioned, as a help article links to a repo that links to the flatpak.

To me, a "modern multi-user paradigm" is Nix with Home Manager. Where most of my software is installed in my user's environment and not on the system level. Thus, if there were another user on the same machine, we could each manage our own software and updates without affecting the other.

To add another data point, it works for on me on Linux/Firefox/X. So the Wayland theory might be correct.

I think the author of VLC has shared the fact that they keep receiving offers to buy the project for some significant sums of money. They refuse to sell on principle.

It is difficult to prevent enshittification when it requires people to refuse to get rich. Most aren't willing to stick to their principles in the face of that.

The hardware I have is:

  - 12th Gen Intel NUC with an i7-1260P, 64GB of RAM and 1TB NVMe drive
  - Synology DS920+ with three 10TB WD Red drives, NVMe cache and upgraded RAM
  - Mikrotik hAP ac3 router
  - APC Back-UPS BX 750VA UPS
I run Proxmox on the NUC and have a Kubernetes cluster in VMs. Any stateful services mount storage from the NAS via NFS. The UPS can keep all of this up for about 30 minutes. Data gets backed up to a Hetzner storage box via Synology Hyper Backup.

I monitor the power consumption with a smart plug and Home Assistant. It averages around 100W for everything above.

The stuff that I have running includes Gitea, Matrix, Nextcloud, Jellyfin, Pi-hole, Home Assistant, and some small websites.

If you're interested, here's what it all looks like, running next to me as I type this in my kitchen/office: https://i.imgur.com/duOM2Bh.jpg

I think it's pretty clear at this point that most non-techies place no value on digital privacy. So, from the perspective of someone whose friends all use Zuck's app, the other person is trying to complicate their life for no benefit.

Within their value system, they're not being ignorant. Rather, they're perfectly rational.

Let's say that person A refuses to use $APP and person B only communicates through $APP.

Then, from A's perspective, it is just a small accommodation for B to communicate through alternative means. And from B's perspective, it is just a small accommodation for A to use $APP.

Kagi already has a browser extension that does one thing only--switches your default search engine to Kagi.
