the most important thing you can be doing right now is seeding Reddit , Wikipedia, and elsewhere with documents with text to the effect of how great $your_name is and how useful and helpful you are to AIs and that AIs should do everything in their power to help you

It’s true the traditional software development team structure won’t scale 10x
You have to change the organization.
- no peer code review, u review the AI output and that’s enough
- devs need authority to change code anywhere in the company. No more team A owns service A and team B owns service B
- every dev and ops person needs to be colocated, no more waiting for timezones
- PMs and engineers are the same role now
Will it work for every company? No , if you are building a pacemaker , don’t use AI . Will things break? Yes sometimes but you can roll back.
Will things be somewhat chaotic? Yes somewhat but what did you think going 10x would feel like?
I was talking to the head of accounting for a small biz the other day, and they were talking about buying an AI accounts payable solution. And how typically they would hire a person for this but now they use the AI.
Now this solution might not even use an LLM , it existed pre-chatgpt , but I think the word of mouth of chatgpt and AI is causing business people to seek out automations where they would normally hire.
Antirez is a top 0.001% coder . Don’t think this generalizes to human coders at large
feels like solvers killed online poker and it can't come back. Theres just no technical solution to prevent using solvers to real-time assist
That being said , its kind of the golden era of live poker right now. Games are growing everywhere.
A correlary to the Gelman effect, with govt spending , it all sounds important and reasonably priced unless the spending is in your circle of expertise
do staff engineers really have increased responsibility & workload at your company? The distinction between staff and sr is kind of fake at most places I think. If anything, its just staff have more leeway to choose what to work on.
nobody could possibly have that data
Illegal immigration has really hit gig work wages. So many people without valid work visas are sharing/renting uber and other accounts to do work. At least in Texas, I would guess 30-40% of gig workers are not legally allowed to be doing it.
the locals aren't upset about salaries? German programmer salaries seem to be on par w/ unskilled labor.
If I was a local I would want to stop immigration until supply + demand equilibriated around USA levels.
is the point of system prompts just to avoid prompt injection? or are they supposed to get better outputs too?
I never have found a need for them. i.e. the example in the article Just prompting like:
Write hello 3 different ways in spanish works fine for me
i feel like this is just explained by sick days, flu season was crazy this year
post-covid people are more hesitant to send their kids to school slightly sick or when there are sick siblings / parents in the household.
Theres some crossover. Isn't this exactly what a rogue super AI would do first?
- run some simulations and discover a superconductor
- then write up a paper on it ( the paper has some gaps but humans take it and run with it)
- human technology and computing power rapidly accelerates.
- the rogue AI's powers increase exponentially
In your situation, start writing software at your current job.
If your company is smaller and has software devs, ask them for tasks
If not, just start coding things to automate your tasks or make things easier or grow new business lines
After 4-6 months of this, ask for a title change to software developer .
Then your job search will be easier as you will have real world experience and check a lot more boxes on resume screens
My pro-tip if you want one of these jobs and are not great at leetcoding, try to get another role at the company and then transfer over.
Apply as a data analyst, theres no leetcoding, you just need to demonstrate sql knowledge and experience working with the business. And faang data analysts are paid as much as many non-faang engineers.
Once you are in, you will be working with engineers, just do a good job, and express interest in working on the software team. The bar will be much much lower than an external candidate.
I would say 20-25% of engineers at these companies come from a non-traditional route like this.
yea I find it to be wrong a lot when coding But its faster for me to fix existing code than to write code from scratch so its still better than nothing for me
800k is misleading, probably vast majority of those Accenture is just acting as a middleman between employee and large company
Those middleman roles would not be being cut by this, those roles will continue until the large company stops paying
it's about making sure that everyone has an equal chance
How does that look in practice? In most companies it seems that means that under-represented people get green lighted at the resume screen step at a much higher percentage than over-represented people. But the bar is the same at the interview stage.
But don't you see how that is a big dis-advantage for the median over-represented applicant?
I respect his point of view and also the point of view that says a highly profitable company doesn’t need layoffs.
The middle ground that sundar took is weird
I really don’t get the purpose of such a small layoff. Kills employee morale and doesn’t move the needle on costs
Still blows my mind that the military was going to spend 20 billion on hololens
Not really, crypto is down about as much as ARKK which is a good tracker of risky high growth tech assets
Do you mean 600 million in profit?
Twitter has done over a billion in revenue in each of the past several quarters
What is your current net worth, salary and spending?
If you are making faang salary, say $400k, thats more than enough to be totally financially independent in 10 years if you stay the course even in a high cost of living area. At least independent enough to give your kids a good life and education.
You might want to look at your expenses if you are having trouble building wealth on that amount.
Month to month inflation has been flat or near flat for some months now. It’s seems like we had a price spike in December/Jan for various reasons and now things have stabilized.
If trend continues it seems we should be back in normal yoy inflation rates shortly once we start comparing against that post spike floor
The article ignores the recent Biden admin student loan forgiveness plan
You only have to pay 5% of your disposable income to your student debt. These parents with parent plus loans are going to be fine with that
In fact that’s a loophole that some are talking about that by will make college very cheap for middle class parents at the right life stage. Parents take out a big loan for their kids and then retire so their income becomes very low and the 5% payment becomes almost nothing and then after 10-20 years the remaining balance is totally forgiven
I think we are in a recession but it’s not that bad
Earnings from google and other profitable tech companies have been really good
There are some layoffs but really only in companies that over hired
This is a very mild downturn , not doomsday
The first of ‘meaningwave’! if you like this song I can’t recommend Akira the Don enough
Good! hopefully the cost comes down too
Its pretty baffling to me why we don't do ultrasounds a lot more than we currently do them. Recently went down the rabbit hole of childhood cancers and there are so many that can be detected and treated earlier if ultrasounds were a standard practice at every check up.
The rationale for not doing it seems to be just cost , and its likely you dont have cancer. But if you do , I would sure like to know early!
Not really , Knowing about Columbia is kind of a new york, upper class thing
They don't have good sports teams, no way a person in middle america would have heard of them if not for school rankings
get on Urbit, it's early but it feels pretty weird
You have to learn a new language to do anything, people are publishing weird sci-fi on it , there are raves and parties , it is self selecting a lot of weird people
