Love the cheeky jab at George R.R. Martin, the site works fantastically, though as others have mentioned an ISBN search would make the entire workflow miles more efficient.

The given example is shockingly similar to what may actually pop up on the HN front page.

As a former moderator of r/unixporn (I went by u/fps_co1ncidence) and a longtime ricer of all types of Linux WMs/DEs, I can most confidentially assure you that there is nothing futuristic about what goes on there, just a lot of pointless tinkering and dotfile copy pasting.

The macOS experience is exponentially more polished and Apple will have to screw up phenomenally even from their current position to feel any threat from the FOSS community.

If I remember correctly it has something to do with Microsoft patenting window drag/snapping to the edge of the screen for resizing.

I mean, it's fast, that's all it claims to be really.

The UI is nothing that can't be fixed with an admittedly large amount of CSS tweaks :)

In such a situation I'd assume you have much more important things to worry about...

Terminal clients like weechat[1] might catch your attention, but I'm pretty sure what you're looking for just doesn't match up with modern UI conventions.

I can also personally vouch for weechat, it's extremely customizable and fun to use.

I semi-frequently send audio files to one of the aforementioned friends of mine, and that’s about it. Everything else is just images (which signal compresses to oblivion btw) and stickers.

The fact that there’s no way to view individual files that have been sent to/from me (+ their sizes) and remove them—like there is for messages.app in macOS—makes troubleshooting even harder here.

I will admit though that I haven’t looked too far into the problem but it’s seems to be an issue that just about every signal user I know deals with.

It also eats up disk space on macOS (and I assume every other desktop considering the client is the same), I've had to reinstall it multiple times now just to save almost a dozen gigabytes of space...

I'm not even an active signal user, I only have a few friends on there, I can only imagine what it's like for someone who uses signal as their only chat app, it must get crazy.

Disappearing messages (4 weeks etc.) help mitigate the problem a little bit from what I've noticed but it's nowhere near a complete solution.

Hand crafted html/scss and posts full of quite literally no meaningful content, just nice design. I’ve taken the time to make it reasonably responsive too so i’ll most likely take a break for the next couple years before adding animations or something.

First and foremost, they should work everywhere, especially the places you describe, almost every native widget (even in third party native apps) should support the readline bindings.

If, however, you desire more control, you can use Karabiner-Elements [0] and one of the many [1] community made emacs-like configurations to have this behaviour system wide, these also add many many more keybinds (such as C-w to delete last word) to further emacsify your workflow!

Think and Grow Rich has been absolutely phenomenal in spearheading the mindset shift I've had over the past couple years, and I could not recommend it any more to anyone who wishes to have financial success in life.

Some may consider the book and its ideologies excessively materialistic, but I personally find that outlook refreshing especially considering the subject matter: making money; furthermore I think that take is a little baseless as the viewpoint on willpower etc. that Napoleon Hill provides can apply to far more than just accumulating wealth if utilized correctly.

All in all though, it was easily one of the most life-changing books I've ever read and I'm glad to see it's affected others positively too, cheers!

It's actually one my favorites, just remap it to CTRL or something similar and bam! You have one of the most ergonomically accessible modifier keys, much better than stretching your pinky all the time.

Not to be the devil's advocate here but... that seems fine to me? Lots of more technical people complain about terrible changelog entries (I've seen quite a few posts on HN about it too iirc), so I guess no matter what Apple does in this case they'll be a target; just that kind of situation.

Maybe it could be a per-project toggle whether having a "what's new" section is necessary (though on second thought toggling that off might become the new norm leading back to the good old useless changelogs).

I personally am not opposed to the Idea that there be more verification involved in important things like Phones and E-Mails (as it's usually a 1-to-1 thing per person anyways) but the privacy and logistics concerns are very valid and will probably stay that way knowing this space.

Such things require either consensus or tyranny, the former of which is nigh-impossible to reach and the latter being not exactly ideal.

Yeah I've flicked it on a couple times but rarely notice much change, though honestly it's not a search engine feature I've come to desire, as even if you get a widget the majority of the time it may parse incorrect data or not even show what you wanted (which happens a lot with google's widgets IIRC).

I've also been using Kagi for ~1 month and god can I testify for how fantastic it's been. You have to TRY to find blogspam and the allowance of blacklisting domains plus some other handy search customization features make it an absolute joy to use.

It may lack "instant answer" widgets or other fancy search engine features but it gets the actual "search" part of the equation so right that I find it astonishing how I ever used DDG/Google in the past.

I wouldn't say that really, there's quite a few people here (including me) who just barely have our foot in the door and would love advice from experienced people such as OP.

Now whether the format of the post is acceptable to the kind of website HN is, I'm not quite sure, though I have seen submissions like these popping up more and more as of recently.

It’s comments like these that slowly start to extinguish that flame i once had in me that wanted to work and chase after a “good life” once i became an adult, is it truly like this?

I look around me in real life however and see what appears to be a reality that contradicts this (people seem mostly happy with where they are, though that could just be my environment or lack of perception), i’m not quite sure how to feel anymore.

HN has filled that hole for me that reddit and 4chan left behind, I don't feel as bad for checking it so much every day though, the content here is a step up for sure.

I personally find IdiotBox[1] to be better than this as it opens links in ad free youtube embeds and also links channel and other information alongside the video itself.

P.S. you can replace the “watch?=“ part of a youtube url with “/embed/“ and get a distraction free view of the video.

Or you could just open it in mpv or something.

Yeah, before moving to iPhone I had been using samsung devices for a long time, and the older samsung android skin had a flashight button on the lock screen which could be activated with just a tap.

Imagine my frustration when I tried doing the same on my iPhone, thankfully a google search saved me much future hassle.
