Maybe because when they do something wrong, they believe an imaginary being will forgive and still love them; or if they encounter difficulty, they can beg this imaginary being to help and think they're doing something meaningful.

There's a big difference in turning a page the size of your hand when you are already holding the book and trying to click a micro button the size of a word when you use the arrow keys to move the browser window.

And, no, you don't know she was in obvious distress, nor do you know the passengers next to her were aware of her problem as they were disembarking.

Not taking the time to help a child to the next gate is normal, any rational actor would expect the airline to take care of it; the fact that they did not does not mean the other passengers lack human decency, what the hell.

Nobody is responsible for other people's children. Not making sure an unaccompanied minor gets to her next flight is not "lack of human decency".

In fact, until you make it possible for people to permanently delete things, you are not. The reason you haven't gotten any complaints is that the people who deleted things on purpose don't send you an email and don't know it can be undone.

I guess that's fair, but since it seems like that's how it got gamed, they should definitely be more strict and send only to your primary or backup number.

Then why are you not using POP or IMAP with a separate password? What are they going to do with the auth code when they don't have your original password?

I'm not trying to defend their stupid choice of offering option #2, but rather trying to offer a solution to your current problem.

You should be using POP or IMAP only on your phone so that you can revoke permission after it is stolen (when you log in to your account from a desktop and use a backup key from the printout). If you are logged in to your main Google account on your phone you are asking for trouble. While I will be sympathetic after it gets stolen and someone ruins your life, I won't be surprised.

I agree with you totally, of course; I was just joking that they won't let you read anything and that is what prompted the initial outrage.

That's not really necessary, after you delete your account they'll block you from reading by themselves.

I've been thinking about this, and I believe there is a distinction since on the bus I am paying for the conveyance, not the content, so at no point do I ever consciously look at the advertising. For a magazine, I am consciously reading the content and they are putting advertising where my attention is directed. It doesn't help that the advertisements in a magazine pad it out so it looks like it has more content than it would otherwise.

I think that is more like a bus that detours to certain shops instead of taking shorter routes. You'd be paying for the conveyance and they would be abusing that by taking your time to gain themselves more money.

I would be willing to either pay more for something completely ad-free or not pay at all. I probably would not pay considerably more. How much extra does a magazine get from advertising? I thought it would be like three or four dollars per issue.

Yes I also do not enjoy being advertised to when watching a movie or TV, so I seldom do it. I don't feel as bad on the bus, although I'm not sure why, since as you point out it is roughly the same thing.

I think it's the presentation of ads in the midst of content VS ads off to the side on the bus.

I find it unacceptable to have any advertisement mingling with content that I have paid for. I stopped reading magazines long ago (before the internet was a real alternative) for this reason. After a person purchases something, they should be treated like a customer, not treated like a product.

I really wish more languages had the option of using a Haskell style type system.

You are right, I remembered wrong for that one. It usually does "Showing results for ... UIView click here to see results for ... NSView". Sometimes I encounter something that gets changed without the option to search for what I typed and I have to quote it.

That's a good point. It's sometimes difficult trying to search for programming topics now. "Did you mean UIView?" No, Google, I really did mean NSView.

Maybe it's difficult to topple the giants, but you should not pick Cuil as an example. Cuil was awful and it died because it put unrelated information together. It certainly did not "still [do] the job perfectly".
