Reflecting on one very, very strange year at Uber 9 years ago

Well, for instance, some amount of power to bargain for better treatment and basic protections, like say a healthy/safe workplace where you don't have to worry about being harassed by a superior and then ignored by HR.

Right now, companies like Uber can treat workers poorly -- apparently at a policy/organizational level even -- because the only thing they feel they have to fear is a bit of bad PR. No one has these workers' backs. HR is concerned with protecting the company. And the workers likely don't have the time, money nor stamina to fight a huge corporation with a lawsuit.

That's why workers need to band together to look out for one another. The deck is already stacked against them.

Hey there, HN!

A few months ago, I threw together a simple tool to control the playback speed of HTML5 video on sites that don't have a speed setting like Youtube.

It has turned out to be pretty useful for me, and I use it constantly to quickly consume content on sites all over the web. It even works on Netflix, if you're interested in watching movies in a fraction of the time!

I figured others might find it useful too, so I cleaned it up, made a little website, and put it out there. I'd love to hear any feedback y'all have!

How Tracking Protection Works in Firefox 11 years ago

I use browser plugins to block ads and third-party trackers on all of my devices. I'm also a web developer, and I regularly set up Google Analytics accounts for my clients.

I agree that the proliferation of tracker blocking could be an issue for smaller publishers and businesses in the near future. But as a privacy-conscious internet user, I'm excited about the vacuum this might leave for better self-hosted options.
