I have a separate grid on each screen. Each with different grid sizes. I have a 3x3 grid on my main display a 2x2 grid on my display to the left and leave my laptop display with no grid constantly locked to my works video conference application.

It works well for me, but as you can see from the comments everyone is different :)

Part of the reason I wanted to to make the app is because _I actually do like fullscreen apps_. Or at least maybe I learned to after they took away the grid. In any case I certainly wanted this app to work with them.

I use the home assistant plugin with it personally, but I have tried the apps and they still work fine both locally and remote.

You are correct this was actually and error in my re-collection. I remembered when writing that it was missing something but mistakenly thought it was the EZ. In fact the model number on the case was "PIC7KS" without the 6. Good spot.

I did it myself, without lawyer help but you will absolutely need someone fluent in Japanese. The paperwork is suffocating. In retrospect I should have just married my then girlfriend, now wife.

I think it's being consumed though, and it's not just Hollywood/America. I've noticed that streaming apps have completely changed my parents (Australian) viewing habits. The ability to sample something then quickly change if desired, has them experimenting constantly. This experimentation has them binge watching a new Scandinavian/French series every week.

I'm not a user of Slack (solo dev) so I guess I'm not the target audience for this. But I am I wrong in feeling that this comes off as completely lame?

Yep thats kind of my point, the idea that a word by itself, regardless of intent could be offensive, made absolutely no sense to them.

To put it into perspective, I've seen nearly every word on your list in different childrens cartoons/anime.

A year or so ago while my Japanese in-laws were visiting, my brother asked them if they would like to try a new swearing card game he was kickstarting(1). I was hesitant to let this happen as although my wife's parents didn't really know the meaning of the words, they knew they were "swear" words, and that might be seen as inappropriate.

In the end this was just my predefined view of what a "swear" word was, clouding my judgement, and everyone had a good time. My in-laws later explained to me that although they knew "swear" words were meant to be offensive, they couldn't wrap their heads around why/how, and as such happily yelled "Cunt!" as easily as they would "Potato!".

Different things work for different people but I'll throw my techniques into the ring. I have worked from home for the last 10 years so some of these won't be suitable for a corporate environment.

- Start immediately, as soon as you get to your work environment. For me that means no breakfast, no coffee etc... until one function/problem/failing unit test/something is done. Since I'm at home when I wake up I get dressed then go straight to the computer and open my editor and start working. This gets me in the mood straight from the beginning of the day.

- I find getting into the Zone is often really about finding the next task to complete. Leaving work on your local machine with a failing unit test or compiler error helps is a good way to give you defined task to complete next time.

- If the environment is noisy and headphones are necessary, music without lyrics. I tend to like trance or orchestral movie and game soundtracks.

- If it's not part of what you want to accomplish don't check your email until after you are already running out of steam. Reading and answering emails is easy enough work but usually completely kills any flow I have or at least fills my head with information not helpful to the task at hand. Same goes for any instant messaging etc...

- In much the same vein disable the internet for a while, I've never been more productive than when I was on an overseas day flight.

- People are distractions too, late nights (when I was in my early 20s) and early mornings (nowadays) are productivity's friends.

- Don't visit sites like HN until after work is finished. Hard to do but is knowing that "Company X releases/is bought by Y" ASAP going to help you work in any way?

- Finally (Work from home/self owned businesses only) if you're not feeling it, call it a day and do something else/go out have fun. If you're anything like me, by giving yourself a break you'll make up for it in productivity later.

First and foremost I believe is resistance to change. The reasoning of "because that's the way it has always been" and general bureaucracy means change is very slow to come. When change is actually put into motion it occurs with amazing efficiency but initial resistance seems much stronger than many other cultures.

Anyway, my personal counter list might go like this:

- Blatant sexism

- The work emphasis placed on quantity (time) over quality

- Despite a reputation of High Tech, requiring paper (printed) documents for nearly everything.

- Meeting people outside of work/school is so unusual that often you can make someones night by striking up a conversation in a bar. Great for the visiting tourist but seems suffocating for many Japanese.

- Fantastic food often ruined by the people chain smoking right next to you.

Still really enjoy living here, but I fortunately don't have to deal with the Japanese work environment like many of my friends do.

Actually bidet button is usually for women, I wouldn't advise pressing it unless you are one, or you will get a blast of water significantly forward of the desired target. おしり(oshiri) is the button thats useful to both sexes.

Agreed. I see no evidence in this article of the writer being a woman having anything to do with it. It seems that she didn't herself make that connection until her "coach" suggested it.

As I stated in the post I also have a MacBook Air that still functions perfectly for development work. I would never recommend a Hackintosh as a developers sole computer. I also mention that I pursued this route because my gaming pc needs a refresh cpu/mb wise and this can be easily converted by dropping in my existing high end GFX card.

You are right about one thing though, it is a cautionary tale. I wrote it because I didn't see enough showing the pain involved.

The return is even less when you factor system upgrades in. I'm glad you got that impression, I originally wrote it up for my friends that were interested as a form of persuading them against it. I perhaps should have made the "con" section larger.

I don't disagree, I'm not comparing the build I did with an actual Mac Pro. I just didn't have time to wait for it (I did this build months ago). As I mentioned at the end of the post if I had seen the tiny mac mini-esque build I linked to before I bought the case I did, I would have built something like that instead.

Regarding startup life in Tokyo, these are the guys to listen to (jason_tko and po). They are actually here and doing it and really hustle hard for it. Their success is truly deserved.

Also Jason briefly mentioned the HN Tokyo meetups they also organise. There is one next month ( http://hntokyo.doorkeeper.jp/events/5489?utm_campaign=event_... ) on the 11th. If you are in any way tech inclined and in the area, it is a great event with lots of cool people.

I'm an Australian living in Japan and this absolutely is a game changer for me. If anything I would think it affects many other countries more than the US.

Definitely more the former. Just walk up to anyone and introduce yourself. Enjoy the good beer and food while talking with interesting people. I go any time I am able and see it as a social event more than anything.

Desks on top of desks never felt safe to me.

My recommendation (as it always is anytime these standing desk articles appear) is the Frederik from IKEA ( http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60111123/ ) Ok it's not $22 but I've picked up two now on special for less than $80.

The Google+ app on iPhone already uploads videos automatically (if you have it enabled of course). Sharing can be done with people who don't use G+ (they can receive a private album link) as well without issue as well.
