Yes, it can happen for multiple reasons. I have personally seen it fail once: a PhD candidate in physics was asked a random but basic question about quantum physics, he couldn't answer, and the committee "voted" no.

From what I have seen, it is more common for people to simply quit their PhD candidacy once they form their PhD committee, because the committee members will ask for a soul crushing extra amount of work before the defense (happened to two friends of mine).

I agree, there is no ghost. Consciousness is an emergent behavior of those elements: neurons, their interconnections, neurotransmitters, etc.

However, in theory it may be possible to reproduce those elements down to a molecular level, allowing the emergence of the "original" consciousness from new matter.

Yup ... I still remember going almost blind by throwing Mg in H2O ... and coming back for more, both experimentally an theoretically.

Besides the other good replies to your comment, I should remind you not to confuse the model with what it describes. We can describe electrons as a wave and as a particle, but in reality they are neither.

In academic circles it is not controversial at all. Outside of academia, people will always resist these facts.

However, keep in mind that this is one part of the puzzle, and always explicitly note that when talking about this subject in public to minimize negative reactions.

I was about to retweet this news while honestly adding, "Who still uses Word?" ... then I remembered that less than one year ago, while still working at Xerox Research, Word was the standard and I was the only weirdo forwarding documents in PDF (because I had not authored them in Word).

... so, besides being aware that your microcosm is not representative ... I don't see how can word die (as it should). There are too many people that cannot drop it due to all the required learning to move away (e.g., most people do not even know there are alternatives to Word).
