My family's health, having enough $ to have my basic needs met (and maybe even some non-basic needs), and type systems that keep me from blowing my foot off :)

This this this. Musk isn't trying to win a popularity contest. He's trying to narrow staff down to that 10% that can do 80% and build back from there. A very cutthroat capitalist approach, but was anyone expecting anything else from the guy who ordered TSLA employees back into factories during covid?

Parent is clearly suggesting that the poster is most likely (as you agree) the product of an environment that the overwhelming majority of folks are not. Nothing wrong with someone being set up well by their parents (isn’t that the point?), and nothing wrong with someone pointing out that someone was setup well. And yes, having a stable, well-ish-to-do family that actively encourages the pursuit of a career via higher education is a pretty remarkable thing. #perspective

Maybe music streaming isn't a technical problem so much though?

Anecdote: I've been a paying Spotify premium subscriber for the past 10 years. I finally switched to Apple Music recently. Why? My favorite song, from my favorite artist (well known, national U.S. artist) is inexplicably unavailable on Spotify - but available on Apple Music.

So maybe Apple is light years behind technically because they see it as a partnerships game as opposed to a technical game.

Snapchat for Web 4 years ago

And just to let you know how absurd Snapchat's login flow is -- I managed to remember my password!

But then I get the "This login seems suspicious, enter your phone number for verification" XD. This is a cruel joke and should be fixed.

Snapchat for Web 4 years ago

If anyone from Snap is reading this.

I can't login to web.snapchat.com because I don't remember my password. I can't reset my password because (1) I don't have an email on the account (FaceID), and (2) the number on my Snap account is from like 4 years ago (FaceID). In order to update the email or update the number, I need a....password.

Someone should fix this.

Mastercard and visa are the de facto regulators of porn

This doesn't have to be the case. There is infrastructure in place for these adult content providers to switch to crypto. It seems to be rather trivial for them to setup fiat on/off ramps for their customers.

Wow. They really weren't trying to hide the fact that (1) They were actively building a CMS in-house at the time, and (2) They thought they did such a good job building said CMS, that they'd check your work vs their own no doubt stunning/transformative in-house work. XD

True.

But I don't think it's so much the firing, as it is the Coinbase telling new hires "Offers won't be revoked". But then, not only revoking said offers, but then additionally firing 1,000+ people.

They're experiencing a bit of a PR relations nightmare ATM. Curious to see if this might hurt them with hiring going forward.

in attracting a docile though technically competent work force

Bingo. IMO this hits the nail absolutely on the head. $BigCo wants docile people who will show up and jump when they're told to jump without asking questions or making a fuss. And they'll throw a big bag of money at you to do so.

Obviously this is an incredibly narrow/limiting employment experience. But different strokes for different folks I guess

Email is _a bit_ similar, but the analogy doesn't work too well. While email might be a decentralized protocol, participation in the protocol requires quite a bit of technical effort. Whereas in crypto (e.g., Bitcoin) you can participate by just downloading a simple client and sending transactions via a nice little UI. In your example, Google actually provides a pretty huge value add by abstracting the complexities of participating in the email protocol away from the user. Crypto protocols (insofar as the assets provided by Coinbase) don't really get _that_ complex

You are indeed not dumb. Coinbase is a bit of an oxymoron. If decentralized value exchange takes off, that will surely be the end of Coinbase. To a degree, Coinbase's demise is baked into crypto's success - which is kinda funny to think about. Coinbase has always seemed like a bit of a money grab, and crypto veterans sort've treat it this way.
