i think everyone knows that perfect security is not possible, the operative word being ‘perfect’. i think what we want is for apple to ‘actually try’ to provide security, in some way that results in security order of magnitudes better than we enjoy today, which would still be miles and miles away from ‘perfect’, vulnerable to nation state actors etc etc etc

except thats it’s curiously well timed for this news to drop at the beginning of holiday shopping, like an advertisement, or possibly, this is pure marketing. nso and apple are partners. apple leaves holes, nso exploit, said holes.

apple controls the hardware and software on apple devices. nso does not. this is public relations for apple, as much as a holiday advert as any they put on tv. if apple wanted to provide their customers secure devices, apple would provide their customers secure devices.

apple builds their own hardware and software. security, or lack thereof, is clearly apples choice. apple blaming nso here is pure public relations and optics, nee propaganda, which many on this board drink like the koolaid it is. it’s confirmation bias.

isn’t that kind of like the press secretary telling the president what to do?

who do we blame for this even being a problem? which engineers at what point in time thought this non error checking non state stable design was a good idea?

strong disagree. there exist truths on a population level. oxycontin addicts traverse similar behavioral patterns, for example. for the worst of all cognitive biases i would say confirmation bias.

these lessons aren’t forgotten, we all just have a lot less power now as consumers. ms knows they are so large they can dictate the behavior of all users up to and including the regulatory bodies, all of which they’ve captured. stand up for your freedom, don’t use trash, don’t be the sucker, don’t be the product.

mbas see whatever they see for whatever reasons they do. it’s usually posturing and signaling to other mba types, often with delusions of grandeur and napoleon complex, not height based.

i’ve had one for years. the way you start is, when you meet an asshole, write their name and company and job title down, and a short, less than 20 words, statement describing the assholery. keep doing that for a few years and watch as patterns start to emerge.

congratulations on finding a comfortable way to work that works for you, allows you to be productive, as well as more socially fulfilled. as someone currently attempting to find a nice niche for myself as well, much respect.

if your org doesn’t work for you in some fundamental way, find a way out, immediately. you can’t change the board, and the board gives hr it’s marching orders, so if you have management you consider to be terrible and a “clueless” hr team, you have to leave. orgs can evolve over time, but they don’t change for you or your feelings, no matter how smart you are or how justified your feelings.
