The binary would not be nearly as useful as the source code. And even if the AI read the binary and copied it, the story is still it reverse engineered and re-wrote a c compiler all on its own. Which is still pretty impressive to me and has real world use cases.

Maybe Anthropic could release the logs to show how the AI was accessing the files.

I was ok with it opening a new story at the end of season 2 because it’s a fascinating dilemma and I’m happy they wanted to explore a deeper question about the morality of having two souls in one body and how that affects their humanity.

However, it should end next season. This idea it’s going to be a long term project is going to ruin everything and now I am sad.

I agree they should make the browser core good, but right now they are entirely dependent on their biggest competitor.

Very interesting that Valve and Framework seem to be throwing their eggs in the Arch basket over Debian/Ubuntu. When I got my first computer, I installed Ubuntu because it was dominant. Maybe it still is for the average Linux downloader, but why are the Hardware companies more into Arch?

They have a “throw everything at the wall and see what sticks.” Sure it has a lot of crap but they also have major hits like Squid Games, Stranger Things, (both became cultural phenomena) and Daredevil.

YouTube has a lot of really positive educational content. I have learned so much from it. For instance, I was able to learn photography from it. Yes it’s still social media in a way, but the benefits can really outweigh the drawbacks with proper use.

Shorts as a whole are incredibly addictive and have a much lower benefit to drawback ratio. Parents should be able to make this cost/benefit decision for their kids. I wish I could turn them off for myself. I settled on only using YouTube on my laptop because shorts don’t have the same appeal in that context.

The writing style and random interjections with eye catching cartoons make it hard to follow.

Network level is more effective in blocking porn, but Kids often join unfiltered WiFi networks. Also I think network management is a bit more complicated for the average person than OS settings. I think both are useful

You need both in the world. Blockers are almost useless for adults with an addiction who can easily just buy a new device or figure out a way around.

Kids can’t really join addiction recovery groups, at least not in the same way adults can because it takes a full understanding of the impacts of porn addiction on life and a desire to stop. I can only speak for myself but even with parents who tried to communicate this, I didn’t have that level of maturity then.

Blockers at least can stop them from accidentally finding it, or generic curiosity. At least until the parents decide they are mature enough to handle the unfiltered internet

I struggle with porn addiction. When I really fall back into it I act out 5-10 times a day. I can’t stop even if I want to. It distracts from work and from my real life relationships and girlfriend.

Everyone on HN loves to rag on social media because it’s so toxic. What about porn? If social media makes it easy to compare my “boring” life with “beautiful” influencer lives, why wouldn’t porn make my normal girlfriend and normal sex seem boring. Part of that is how young I found porn when my brain was still developing and forming how it processed sex and relationships. Porn makes me feel so depressed.

I am sure other people handle porn and social media better than me. And that’s ok, I respect that. *But even if you think porn is ok as an adult, can’t you see why adults should be able to have more control over what their kids see.* Yes if they are motivated kids will find it - I learned a lot of the engineering skills I have now getting around my parents blocker. *Not every kid is that good and this might help many.* If it’s not required to be on in the OS, what’s the harm?

Swapping my phone number every year in the US would be an annoying as hell. Tons of services use phone number as 2FA or a backup recovery. (Including a lot of banks) I use SMS with some people and that would cut contact with them. Same direction if they changed numbers.

Every major station I went to in Japan had a huge mall with restaurants connected to it owned by the rail company. Inside stations were rail company owned gift shops, convince stores, etc.

Japan’s rail privatization was extremely successful and it’s considered one of the best rail networks in the world now.

I think it’s simple economics. A competitor starts scrappy and has nothing to lose. It will take risks because if it fails because it has nothing to loose and everything to gain. It’s successful and as it grows in success it becomes more risk averse because it has so much more to loose. It looses the scrappiness that made it the dominant force.

This happened to the Roman Empire and it’s what’s happening to our current world order.

I’m going to Japan in a week and I’m doing 1 week Tokyo, 2 days Nakasendo trail, 1 week Kyoto, 2 days Hiroshima. (Plus a day leftover I haven’t decided what to do with)

Do people have tips to find less touristy but still worthwhile places to go. Tourists go for these big places because traveling to Japan costs quite a bit and I’m using limited vacation time. Planning the trip in a location where the language doesn’t even have the same characters and I don’t have many familiar geographical reference points that coordinate with known cultural themes (unlike Europe) is already a bit overwhelming.

New trains are very sexy, but what’s really needed is the very unsexy difficult track replacement and enforcing passenger train right of way. (Which may involve side pass extensions and/or freight train length restrictions) More people will travel if the times go down. Maybe the new trains will increase comfort which I could see being a draw.
