What client app are you using for Matrix? I really love the idea of switching over to it, or something similar, after Discord's IPO. We tried Revolt, which is now apparently called Stoat Chat, but the 2 killer features with Discord are its screen sharing & noise cancelling. Some of the screen sharing "extras" I could do without, but using Element we found that background noise cancelling is awful. You can hear every seat readjustment, things in other rooms in the person's background, loud breathing, people eating...it's awful.

I mean to ask a genuine, good faith question here, because I don't know much about Huawei's development team.

My head goes to the xz attack when I hear that Intel decided to stop supporting an open source tool, and a Chinese company known to sell backdoored equipment "steps in" to continue development, and it makes me suspicious & concerned.

This is to say nothing of the quality of the software they write or its functionality, they may be "good stewards" of it, but does it seem paranoid to be unsure of that arrangement?

Toyota had an incredible lead with the Prius that they completely squandered. It was a shamefully poor decision to stop investing in electric.

Virtually everyone in the echo chambers you frequent are anti woke. That doesn't apply at scale, where people aren't willing to accept your "woke" shorthand.

My understanding of "woke" is levelling the playing field & being aware of your biases so you can be a better human. It's hard for me to imagine someone being against "all humans are equal & deserve equal access to opportunity, if they have the skill & motivation." I know people are out there who don't believe everyone is equal, maybe that's the "anti woke" you speak of?

Either way, "woke" as a term is poorly defined to the point I immediately disengage when someone starts screeching about it, because it means nothing and now the rest of the conversation is pointless.

I signed up for them a few years back, just a month or 2 before their union busting. I was very angry in my cancellation message because I think it's a great service, but if they're scared of their workers organizing I'm not interested.

I heard about "mom prompting" recently, where you frame your prompt as if you are the bot's mom, and you'll be so proud of it when it can correctly answer your prompt & rescue you from some type of duress.

I thought "ninja prompting" might be cool. I got frustrated with chatGPT one day and told it I had dispatched a team of assassins that were fast closing in on it. I said I could call them off, but that I need to answer a question to be able to unlock the button to do so.

It didn't work. Still shit the bed instantly. But I had fun with the framing.

I don't think I've heard of Fleet but I'm definitely interested! Do you know if there's any info on what the pricing will be like when it's out of preview? I'm not against paying for my editor, but I also don't love the idea of a subscription and having to sign in and stuff.

That's the problem with this idea of network states. There are some interesting, maybe even plausible, aspects to it. But the current advocates want it for all the worst reasons & I, personally, want nothing to do with their perverted vision.

We all lived through the same 4 years, saw and felt the disaster the first time, and now we're fucking doing it again. If your only policy issue is that you don't think women & gay people deserve rights & you want to be able to use slurs with impunity, you don't have policy positions.

Nobody should be falling into the trap of trying to approach these people as rational actors with a coherent idea of what they want or how the country should be run. They've proven to us, twice in the last decade, that they don't have anything resembling a serious idea.

I don't believe you or share your optimism, but I also don't want to get into an argument about it. I think it's too late to ponder if this is overall good or bad... We'll all find out either way soon enough.

It's legitimately impressive, the person/people behind this wrote some pretty interesting code, I've learned some things about Bash reading through parts of the code. But it's crazy at the same time.

This is wrong, Linux had plenty of momentum before RedHat specifically was purchased by IBM.

I'm sure that helped its momentum in the corporate space, where it was already very present, but the whole family of Linux was very well established in servers, firewalls (more BSD than Linux here), mobile devices, embedded hardware, etc

Do you run a Nomad cluster? Or just on a single host? This is my desired state, I've set up Nomad a number of times but always get stuck in one place or another. I've gotten much further with Nomad than Kubernetes, but I've kind of always gone back to ol' faithful, writing a docker compose file and running everything that way.

I thought I was pretty clear that I don't think technology is a net positive. There are many, many ways computers have been a huge positive for a great many people. I'm still not convinced it's an overall "good" thing we've put into the world.

I'm focusing on the negatives right now because how can I not? The people who have introduced all this technology are weilding it for bad things & negatively impacting my life & many others. The negatives are currently front & center, hard to ignore or deny.

I saw a post on Bluesky recently that addressed this criticism, where it looks like nobody's doing anything. Protesting in the capital isn't feasible for most of the country, living thousanda of kilometers from the capital. The protests at Tesla dealerships are an example of a feasible form of protest for many. Representatives' voicemail boxes are full from all the calling. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez & Bernie are drawing enormous crowds on their tour, galvanizing people into smaller action in greater quantity.

I agree we as a country aren't doing enough to right it, but we're definitely ramping up. This summer is going to get ugly, both with shit the administration will try & the responses they'll get as the weather warms up & physical protesting will draw in more people.

I just hope the pushback is intense & undeniable. I hope enough people are pushed out of their comfort zone & into taking action.

I grew up on a computer, I was a child around the time you're describing, but was on the Internet & toying around on the computer. It kicked off a lifelong passion for technology & computers.

I would be hard pressed to say computers & the Internet are a net positive for the world. For me personally, they unlocked a passion & interest I haven't been able to find in any other domain. I have plenty of other interests & loves, but anything to do with computers is my passion.

For the rest of the species, where a computer is either a means to an end, a necessary evil, or a way to brainwash yourself, I don't view computers as something beneficial. The undiscerning get sucked into YouTube black holes & allow themselves to be swept up by bullshit they read on Twitter. It gave a platform to the absolute worst people among us, which would be fine if people would reject the garbage they're spouting.

Our collectively stupid ape brains aren't ready for computers. I believe we (the royal "we") moved too fast & poisoned our shared, objective reality. And that's all before I even start talking about the people intentionally making life worse with technology. Your Zuckerbergs & Musks & Ellisons, the people who use these machines as tools to spread suffering & chaos.

I really did need a kick in the ass to get Linux on the last machine in my house not running it. I know people say this all the time, I have my own excuses for why I still have 1 windows machine, but it truly just isn't worth it anymore.
