Its odd how I viewed academia as a beautiful place where people were judged by merit not by politics. Then I joined it and realized its even more cutthroat than corporate politics, I guess you cant escape human fallibility no matter the system since all systems are reflections of human nature.

Question, what stops openai from downgrading existing models so that you're pushed up the subscription tiers to ever more expensive models? I'd imagine they're currently losing a ton of money supplying everyone with decent models with a ton of compute behind them because they want us to become addicted to using them right? The fact that classic free web searching is becoming diluted by low quality AI content will make us rely on these LLMs almost exclusively in a few years or so. Am I seeing this wrong?

Assuming I'm a politician, couldn't I use those imported people to stir up trouble so I can get enough political support to change legislation so it fits me like in the article here? More surveillance and control isn't a bad thing if you're at the top. Furthermore these imported people all have very simple "triggers" to make them do violent stuff so its very easy to use them towards your own ends.

But as you say its a self sustaining cycle and the end result will be fully automated repression. Why is anyone surprised about this? This will be a global phenomenon since LLMs together with ubiquitous surveillance brings down the costs of policing to 0. Just add police drones and you have a foolproof system. There is not a single country in this world whose leaders will decide that "nah we dont need perfect surveillance"

While mister Simons might not be the best example, I sometimes feel that you can easily beat the market if you are well connected and have access to information that can move the markets before anyone else. For example how much know-how do you need to beat the market if you're a US senator? You know before anyone else what's going to happen regarding policy and can plan accordingly. There were rumours about this even regarding Simons' Medallion fund. About how all the talk about math and algorithms was just a red herring to divert from the fact that it was mostly insider knowledge that did the heavy lifting. Alas these rumours were never confirmed as far as I know.

Wasn't this always the plan? If you combine scarce housing (by law or otherwise) and unrestricted immigration then you can get people to fight for scraps whilst taking 30-60% of their paycheck on average just through renting and also maybe through software subscriptions in the near future. In this way you can extract maximum productivity out of them because each month they're just a few steps away from homelessness. You also depress wages by a lot due to immigration which is doubly beneficial for the owning class AND you force the workers to be more productive because otherwise they'll be replaced by desperate immigrants. Its quite literally perfect from a capitalist point of view. The only thing that can put a stop to this are violent revolts. But if you have automated policing via drones and ubiquitous surveillance it should be easy to subdue the unruly masses.

Its inevitable because of the power dynamics between democracies and totalitarian regimes. Democracies thought that with the internet they would topple totalitarianism because of free flow of information. They forgot that totalitarian regimes can just imprison and shoot all who have access to and propagate the information. Now the wheel has turned and the same regimes are weaponizing AI and shill farms to create enough propaganda to destabilize a democracy for the price of a few dollars. We're all headed towards a global race to the bottom because of it, the dream of the early internet has been crushed because of human evil.

There seems to be an innate characteristic of technology that if you solve a problem using it, two more problems spring out. Not sure why that is but it seems life has become ever more complex and yet at the same time its not getting better

Could Transformers/LLMs take over custom software implementations given enough training? Why have so many custom ERP software suites or anything else related to the backend if a transformer can do the work?
