This is awesome. Just for awareness - I started going through the book a few days ago and there's a lot of other useful information outside of the LC style questions (e.g. what's actually important on a resume, how to realistically get your foot in the door with companies, etc.). Very data driven and comprehensive, so for me there's still a lot of value in the non LC parts of the book.

I sent a selfie when the YT video came out. Even though it's basically a picture of a picture, I can't help but be excited that it's being taken from actual space. Great for getting the kids excited about what engineering can do.

Pretty cool video I found. I'm a total noob at robotics, but this really got me motivated to learn more. Entertaining, but also educational - kudos to the Robonyx creator.

The idea is that users find projects match their interests. If you have an idea, you can post it and someone else may reach out to work on it with you. And if you're not an "ideas person" and want to join another project that looks interesting, you can find a project someone else posted. It's a simple concept, but solution that addressed a problem I was having (assuming there are enough users to actually post and look for projects :)).

Haha that's nuts - if nothing else, it's pretty good validation that others have this same problem. Let's definitely connect - you guys are building something really cool and I'm looking forward to seeing how you've grown and where you all go. I liked your YT ad too btw - lol we really do have almost the exact same idea. I'll check out the community.

On that I'll agree ;) realistic part is relative - you're also just guessing what 'people' want and assume everyone is like you. Based on the above assertion I hope not. Time may prove you right or wrong - no harm in testing an idea.

It doesn't offend me, I'm just not sure if you're trolling me or not haha. This is one of the more bizarre threads I've seen. I don't have a forum website. It's a site to post projects. You're right, I do want users. That's why I posted. Please reread the above. This is a free site. I'm paying for it out of pocket. I'm working on it in my own time on the side. I want users AND I think it's interesting. If people find it interesting they'll use it, if not they won't. No tricking, but you have to make users aware of your site to validate or invalidate the idea.

Anyone could create and host that kind of site now, for any topic and they could do it for free. No one does though for obvious reasons.

You're implying that any site that could be created and isn't, is because they're all bad ideas. I disagree. It might be in this case, but the idea that you shouldn't test ideas is wrong.

You're up against reddit, LinkedIn, X, and countless other social networks. No one is gonna use yours unless you have something unique to offer that no one else has.

Thanks, that's useful feedback. My thought here is that it'd be easier to find partners on a purpose-driven site dedicated to side projects than posting "who wants to work on X" on linkedIn or similar where contacts may not be devs or people interested in side projects. I see your point too - I think the best way to see is to do a little more promotion, see if it's useful to people, and throw it away if not (or keep it as a keepsake for myself). Let me know if you have any other thoughts here though.

I know my site is empty, it's an MVP I just brought to a state where I feel comfortable sharing. If the feedback here is to "get more users so your site isn't empty", I totally agree. Hence the post.

Curious about this - do you have an example? If I want to build a site related to music and am looking for someone to build with on the technical side, are you saying you'd find a developer on a music forum? I think it depends on goals here.

I'm gonna have to read up more on this one. I have a hard time grasping how this is possible:

Given the main anecdote:

Seems like there's a long way to go here.

The article left me with a couple questions - is cancelling a visa for not declaring something like frog embryos normal protocol? Does ICE have evidence that not declaring them was intentional? In any case, I really hope she doesn't get deported. If it was just a mistake, this seems like an abuse of power.

Anecdotally, I plan to leave my big tech company job within the next year for something remote. It'll likely be a pay cut, but we have kids and know they'd prefer growing up near their cousins. It's a tough tradeoff, but they only grow up once and if we can get something that still pays reasonably well it'll be worth it in our opinion. Plus no commute which is always nice.

The comments in this thread freak me out. Either the world's media has brainwashed the population into believing America is failing and the 'right' is evil/dumb, or I'm totally delussioned (as an American) for seeing mostly good in what the current administration is doing. Both are terrifying.

Seems overly risky. Probably better to put money in domestic/international bonds/stocks. Crypto is fun but I still haven't seen a practical use case (not to say there isn't one, I just haven't seen it yet).

Strobelight is a lifesaver. Especially with high qps services - makes it much easier to see where it's worth spending time trying to optimize.

Maybe it's always been this politically one sided and I just hadn't noticed until now, I just always saw it as a place for cool tech and real discussions. But now I'm noticing liberal comments are incentivized and anything remotely non liberal (like this one) are flagged into oblivion. I guess this means I should probably spend less time in comment sections, content just seems skewed now.

I agree with you. You put on your own oxygen mask before you can help others. The US has debt interest payments of over a trillion dollars a year - totally unacceptable. We can't keep funding a war that can be willingly ended.

Thanks for the honest response. I still find myself pulled into some topics (e.g. this thread), but I've largely tried to avoid the comments lately. Honest conversations are hard to have without getting flagged for disagreeing with people.

Who gets to decide what the gap can be? Employees? I don't believe there are ever "unbiased, third parties" in these situations. You want to pre-emptively prevent one outcome by controlling the company - but this level of power also comes with side effects. Why take the risk of starting a company when you don't control income? Who's to say people won't want to continually lower that income gap until countries stop innovating? You have to consider the negative side effects of your own solution...else risk thinking about the problem "too narrowly".

I know this is gonna trigger some people, but I don't get the outrage here. Does everyone here work at Meta or feel bad that those at Meta are getting treated unfairly? If not, why get angry at what another company rightfully chooses to do? Instead of complaining, we could all start our own multi billion dollar businesses...but that would require more risk which most rightfully don't want to take on. Both are choices made by those responsible for the outcomes of those choices. No need to get upset.

I've worked at Meta. It sucks they laid off people (I have a friend who was impacted), but that's the companies job - make hiring/firing decisions. And I couldn't care less what they pay the exec team - what are they paying employees relative to other companies? Is it good? Ok, maybe I'll choose to go there for a little bit.

There's a lot of issues with social media - I don't think anyone denies that. But not everyone thinks like the HN crew. What about the millions of users who actually enjoy FB and use it to connect with friends and family? To pretend that use case doesn't exist seems naive and biased. There's a reason these companies are so big - some people actually like them. Maybe they're the naive ones and we need to save them from themselves, but I don't think it's that black and white.
