I think that was their biggest mistake. They grew too fast and took too much money before they had any clear way to make money. If it was ran as a sustainable business, maybe it would be around for the next 5 years.

Why is that? There is less money in circulation, so less chance you'll get any. Are they making wiser choices? So if you're company is a wise choice you'll get funding?

Its actually more on the creative side. SoundCloud has such a low barrier to posting and acts more as a sort of Twitter or YouTube than a playlist maker. It allows culture to form around the community of SoundCloud, not just fans that you advertise directly.

I really enjoy how most of the abstracts in these papers are more like ELI5s, or just plain understandable. I think having an understandable abstract would be valuable for many papers to have to make large complex sciences understandable for people not in the field. Would there be any downside? The only one I can think of is that conclusions could sound more convicting in a simplified summary.

I can see that by using Microsoft CodePush or similar. But you can't change the description, in app purchases or title without going through the approval process again.

Serverless apps run in reaction to an event such as a web request or a file upload. In the serverless model your app has functions that run in response to these events. The classic cloud model is you pay for a server or container that is constantly running.

Its kinda equivalent to a timeshare condo vs renting a condo. Your functions only run when they are called.

I used it for a new project I started 6 months ago. We've since transferred to AWS and a Express/Node.js project. However the Parse Server open source project is very well maintained and supported. I would recommend it for any quick prototype project you need a backend, but don't need it to do anything fancy.

I really don't like ads just like most everyone else, but I can't help but feel there is a missed opportunity here. Facebook just put classic mobile letterbox ads in a side scrolling container.

In such a unique platform such as Messenger you could get a bit more creative. One such example: Suggested pages to message. This would get companies leads and keep people on the Messenger platform. This might not be the best use, but with this product, Facebook can do better than just a re-skin of mobile banners.

This is a real cool way to explain XSS in an easy concrete way. Love the thought process and actual code examples.

I've always wanted to implement this process (sending to mac, and through imessage) into the core sms sending service of android. Have the service check the number, if it is on imessage use that, otherwise do sms. Would this be feasible? Ignoring the reliability of the system.

The main dangers with sugar (table sugar, high fructose corn syrup) is how your body absorbs it, and the amount of fructose in it. Fats and proteins are broken down to glucose, yes, however this process is done over time, and it is almost ALL glucose, which is what your body uses as fuel. However when you drink sugary beverages like soda or orange juice (yes even orange juice is bad for you), you get an extreamely high dose of fruit sugar, very quickly (fruit sugar is different than sugar because it has a higher concentration of fructose in it which is bad).

Also, the reason fruits are healthy while fruit juice is not is that fruits have sugar in them, but between all the sugars, there is fiber, cell walls, and other parts of the fruit that slow down the absorption of the sugar. Another reason is that there is simply less sugar in 1 apple than there is in 1 glass of apple juice (there is around 8 apple squeezed into 8 ounces of juice).

This isn't exactly related to the article, but I think this post is an amazing example of how to write an interesting blog post yet, at the same time tie it to what you are selling and make people want to know more about your product without directly telling them to.
