I don't see these other people as fellow developers, but as golf-playing executives or their children. I'm aware that not everyone here is a dev, but we mostly have similar careers.

A store is one of the "amenities" I'd provide. But you're right about the hospital and education part. I'd probably have a daycare, but anything higher gets harder to do. In any case, it'd be a temporary thing for digital nomads

I've been thinking that if I suddenly had a large sum of money, I'd buy one of these villages, renovate it, add amenities and proper internet, and then rent the individual homes to people that work remote, or set it up as a kind of co-living and co-working space, like a company town.

A hundred years ago, we didn't have many of these jobs, but people managed to live. We've automated most of the actual production jobs, but instead of having more free time, we have telemarketers, and everyone still works 40 hrs/week minimum.

You're forgetting the square part. One square meter is roughly 10 square feet, your home is closer to 910 sq ft.

I want to clarify that I don't necessarily think that this is a bad thing. The "american dream" where everyone owns a 4000sq ft home, a wife, 3 kids, a car for each person and a backyard with a pool and a trampoline is not sustainable even in the short term. It's important to make the sustainable choices cool.

As an European I find it weird that these people decided to go live in a place with a backyard and no public transport though.
