Note that Verizon has a division - Product Innovation and New Business - that is run separate from the telco business that you are mentioning.

In recent years Verizon has acquired technology companies EdgeCast Networks (CDN) and upLynk (Video Streaming) which form the core of Verizon's Digital Media Services [1].

Combining these assets with AOL (AdTech) and Yahoo (if the deal happens) gives Verizon an end-to-end platform for the creation, delivery and monetization of content (with focus on video) in the Internet.

Disclosure: I work at EdgeCast and we operate as a technology company, hate bureaucracy and try very hard to innovate and stay agile.

Unfortunately not. We gave a lot of thought to open-sourcing the underlying system, but this is ultimately not something we will support.

Oh man this is sad news. I'm currently using Mailbox as my default mail app on Android. I'll pay for it is there was an option.

My grandfather, while studying law in the Philippines was drafted to fight for the United States Armed Forces of the Far East (USAFFE) during WWII.

I guess he was part of the few that got US citizenship as he was able to bring his children and consequently his grandchildren (me) to America.

I am thankful for what he has done so I can live the life I have now. In return I try to contribute to society the way I know best by writing software for startups, SpaceX, and now EdgeCast.

Companies/organizations have different requirements for code reviews. Yes you can review code in pull requests, but in my opinion, it was not built for code reviews. In my previous company, we had a very rigorous code review process, which includes pre and post commit code reviews. We used Collaborator[1] and ReviewBoard[2] for code reviews and I totally understand why the Go team would use Gerrit over pull requests for code review.

I worked at SpaceX from 2010 to 2013, first doing software development on our manufacturing operations system, then later on on our telemetry/time-series platform. I think I averaged between 60 to 70 hours a week, which includes weekends if we need to support test or launch activities. In retrospect, that seems like a lot of hours, but it didn't feel like it because the work and the mission of the company is so inspiring. Elon was the final interviewer when I joined (I don't think he is doing that anymore) and he was explicit that working at SpaceX takes a different level of commitment.

Since you are interested in search, see if you can use Kibana for your dashboards (http://www.elasticsearch.org/overview/kibana/). Kibana uses ElasticSearch which uses Lucene. If you are able to convince your team to use Kibana then maybe you can ask your boss to spend some company time contributing to ElasticSearch and/or Lucene.

I've got Ubuntu 12.04 on a W510 and am very happy. Thinking about upgrading to X1 Carbon since the W510 is heavy.

Can you share more info about your experience setting up/using Ubuntu on the X1 Carbon? Any issues?
