I do both. In my case textbooks are to fill theoretical needs/gaps. I go through full books in some cases and in others it is not feasible based on various factors (difficulty of subject, need, content, 500+ pages etc.) I find that some of the newer textbooks give a helpful flowchart of chapters so one can choose their "adventure" based on interest or the curriculum needs (of an instructor).
On occasions I abandon reading after a chapter or two if I don't think it serves my needs or the subject matter is too difficult for me. In the latter case I may try to look for an alternative or come back to it once I have gained pre-requisite knowledge.

Also, this would be contrary to GP's comment - it would be the right reason. Imagine if a bald person is walking by and a toupee happens to fall on their head and they can see themselves in a window reflection of a toupee shop that just so happens to be there.
Use some ML/AI to choose the right fit, style, hair color etc., the drop orientation, and angle. Throw in some ChatGTP integration to suggest using scalp glue. Combined with OP's marking skills they will be in business in no time!

Perhaps, however I find decent value in some of these kinds of submissions - it is in the comments. The book recommendations and benefits of queueing theory mentioned here have already been worth it for me. I love going down technical rabbit holes.

On the same subject can someone recommend a book or any other resource to learn about virtual machine internals? My goal is to try to build a toy clone of VirtualBox/VMWare.
So far I have found one -- Virtual Machines by James E. Smith and Ravi Nair.
When I was learning to play the saxophone my instructor had an old copy of the Real Book. The transcriptions of songs by some of the jazz legends would blow my mind. I thought the people being able to transcribe those were geniuses (still do). They had no sophisticated software to help them. It was all done manually by listening to countless hours of recordings over and over again. All those chord changes, harmonies, the extra fast tempo...

Can someone recommend me a good online course in automata theory (or even a book). I tried Ullman's course on edX (or Coursera, don't remember). But I found it a bit difficult to follow -- seemed a bit dry and monotonous, to me at least.
Had the same experience with Ullman's book (first edition at least). I have enough theoretical background in CS and am not averse to reading dense material.
I feel similarly. I bought a hand-wound mechanical watch. And my electric blender - does only one thing i.e. blend. Then there is the stone knife sharpener.

I have been watching some BTC related companies recently and one caught my attention - Canaan. A few days ago they announced purchase orders of 100,000 mining machines for 2021. Supposedly many were pre-paid.
Also of note was their claim that in late 2020 they shifted their client base from individual miners to mostly publicly traded companies.
I am not sure what to make of it. Maybe HN can chip in?

a. I don't trust any VPN provider's claims. Plus I wanted more control including ability to turn on/off logs if needed. As an experiment I started with an AWS lightsail instance. It worked so well that I now I don't feel I need anything with more resources (up to about 10 clients). That doesn't mean I trust AWS entirely but for now I will live with it. I like using a CLI and AWS's browser based CLI is pretty good (but be wary of copy-paste snafus).
b. The other reason I went with a cloud provider like AWS is that their static IP seems to be whitelisted fairly well especially with their own service - Amazon Prime. So I have had not problem watching videos while traveling. Also in the past macOS and iOS updates were problematic via VPN. But that seems to have gone away. Maybe because they bypass VPN? I don't know for sure.
c. Many of my friends have been asking for help. I figured if I went with one of the big 3 cloud providers it would be easy for me to basically create an instance image preloaded with all the scripts and WG etc. that they can then run from their own accounts.
d. The big 3 cloud providers uptimes are far better than many of the VPN providers.
I have had the opposite experience to OP. I have the macOS app installed on several Macs (laptops and desktops). They have all worked so well to the point that I even forget Wireguard is running. On top of that I upgrade macOS almost as soon as Apple releases a new version.
It is true that for updating WG you need to first disable the on-demand setting (probably only on Big Sur). But to me that is such a trivial hiccup considering it is free and generally bug free! On the rare occasions that I have had a non-trivial issue looking at the log file has provided clues.
My VPN cost is only about $5/month as I run my own instance of WG server in the cloud. Worth every penny! It is possible it could be lower if I use one of those #3.50/month AWS lightsail instances but I never tried.

I love those motorcycles. Sometime back I wanted to build my own from parts. Started some research only to find out that some states (in the US) make it very difficult to register a custom built m/c. The assembly seemed easier in comparison.
