You could have said that about the dotcom bubble and be correct at that time. But the gold rush analogy fits very well for that scenario with the benefit of hindsight.

Any scenario including the current startup rush could be made to fit into either one of the options presented.

The reality is: a) currently we are not in an economic slump wrt startup funding b) there will be companies which will make it out of the gold rush looking like visionaries (ala Levis Jeans). c) there will be companies that have attracted significant capital which will go bust.

That is market economics with nothing unusual. The determining factor would be the % of the companies funded which will survive and thrive. I would bet towards a high percentage of busts than winners. And that doesn't make me a genius, i am just stating the obvious.

More often, startups fire employees under the disguise of performance. I am not sure what constitutes non-performance but it has been used countless times as an excuse for getting back the unvested stock options.

You hit the nail on the head. In a bad economy/tech market like 2001, the recruiters were rude, unreachable and acted like Gods. After 9/11 2001, a recruiter sent me resume of few other candidates vying for the same job and asked me to write a page describing how I am better than those candidates.

Now, the tables have turned, we developers consider recruiters as dirt bags. I have no doubt that the tide will turn again. We just don't know when.

I can only guess but you definitely are not in your 30's yet. I held the same exact sentiments in my 20's. Then I got to my 30s and I realized I haven't done all that I wanted to do. I can slowly see time slipping away and 50 is not too far.

I am afraid 50 isn't enough, time wastes too fast.

I've never been impressed by any of the startups that are released in the last few years (YC or other wise). Including my own products. I find them run of the mill, meh kind.

The last product that I thought was cool, was Dropbox and that was a few years ago.

I was doing this judgment thing while I am trying to promote my own products. And I realize how hard it is, how difficult it is to find anyone to give a shit.

I now applaud anyone who gets a semblance of recognition or notoriety. Gimmicks or otherwise. I know how hard it is to pull those off. May be some are lucky and are born to attract the world towards them. But most are not.

There must have been an incredible amount of sacrifice, self doubt and disappointment that I do not know about.

I now celebrate every one's victories, no matter how small they are. I know how hard they are to come by.

That article is a great example on a startup providing a compelling story for coverage by media. I don't doubt that they used the 400$ given by YC for Grouper but the 400$ probably was not the limiting factor.

In the circle that I move around, everyone wants an ecommerce store for their business that can generate sales even when they are sleeping.

I tell them I am busy with my own stuff but I take time to meet and listen to them. After the meeting, I do research, put together a plan with the breakdown of costs for outsourcing development, marketing and the estimated revenue.

That's when I stop hearing from them. They get either too busy or they realize that it's not as easy as they think. I am yet to find someone who followed up on the plan.

Isn't life always like that? Many with plans but very few who act on them.

Are you really set on keeping it a single page site? I can understand the simplicity of it but if you know small business men, they want ease of use and a lot of control too.

I can see some scenarios like showing decor, pictures for each menu item, banquet hall facilities etc where they would want more than a single page.

May be I've become cynical but

90% of the email I get in my personal account is from people/startups/companies selling me stuff.

90% of the twitter stream is people pimping their wares (either blog posts or products they endorse).

90% of my facebook wall is filled with inane things.

May be the only way to be successful is to constantly sell yourself and your products.

I haven't viewed the world this way until I started friending and networking with entrepreneurs.

A cousin passed away few years back with cancer. It wasn't sudden but wasn't expected either. (He was 37 and responding well to treatment). His wife was completely uninterested with regards to finances and bills.

He was quite meticulous and wrote down every single account he owned, details like account number, login, password in an excel spreadsheet. It was a lot of help for her.

I worry about security of such a system. I also worry about security of online services for using such a system. I also worry if my wife would be able to locate that file.

Something about Murakami's writing style conveys great honesty.

By scrollable categories, I mean that you have categories mentioned below in long list. I don't know if anyone would have patience to go through them. Certainly not me.

A scrollable categories list would show different categories in a nicer way with 4 at a time and a more button to view the complete list if someone is interested.

You might have better metadata than anyone else but I didn't get it from looking at the page.

Seriously my friend, that site needs some design love. I am no design guru here but that site desperately needs a designer.

Here are a few things I would suggest:

1. Search box at the top to search images. 2. slide show of random images front and center. 3. A call to action button to upload images. 4. scrollable or scrolling categories.
