Disclaimer: I'm the founder of Friendly Captcha, so I'm very biased.

I agree the hCaptcha challenges are probably the most inaccessible of them all once you are not part of the low friction flow any more. Can we really expect grandma to tell the difference between circuit boards and aerial city photography?

In the future feel free to give Friendly Captcha [0] a try, we only have the low friction mode (on any plan). Our free plan should work for hobby projects, and above that our pricing is in line with competitors. We aim to be the most privacy friendly and accessible option (being the only ones with WCAG AA Gold).. and aside from that just being the one that is the most invisible to genuine users, I think our not-getting-in-the-way actually makes us less known..

Friendly Captcha | Developer Relations | PART-TIME or FULL-TIME | Munich area, Germany | https://friendlycaptcha.com

At Friendly Captcha we do one thing and we do it well: we protect websites from malicious actors and bots.

We provide privacy-friendly and accessible anti-bot solutions that don’t annoy users with tasks like clicking fire hydrants. We make the internet a bit better every day by winning over customers currently using Google reCAPTCHA.

Friendly Captcha is a growing, profitable, fully bootstrapped company. Our revenue mostly comes from medium to large European enterprise and governments. We have the feeling we can make ourselves known better to engineers and other builders to gain more bottom-up growth.

We're looking to strengthen our team with someone who will be focused on our Developer Relations (DevRel) and general marketing activities. We're a startup and this is a pretty mixed role that's hard to describe in one or two sentences. It ranges from technical writing through building specialized tools and demos to support getting the word out.

We’re a growing, profitable, fully bootstrapped company. Our revenue mostly comes from medium to large European enterprise and governments.

We’re looking for an engineer whose focus will be on using data to improve our bot detection and protection. Telling apart bots from genuine users is vital to our product.

If possible, we prefer to keep things simple (perhaps boring is the right word even?) - choosing an if/else rule over a neural network. Good knowledge of the web is always useful in this company. At our scale we are looking for generalists more than specialists. The role is more about enabling for easy experimentation, data exploration and being creative in anti-bot approaches, than building the perfect ETL pipeline.

Our engineering team is fully remote across Europe, we meet up in person a few times per year. You can work either 4 or 5 days per week, fully remote or (partially) from our Munich office. Please note that we ONLY consider candidates located within the EU/UK/EEA/Switzerland.

We’re a fast-growing, profitable, fully bootstrapped company. Our revenue mostly comes from medium to large European enterprise and governments.

We are currently hiring for two roles: a DevOps infra-focused Engineer, and a (polyglot) Integrations Engineer.

For the DevOps engineer a great fit would be a pragmatic builder who prefers to keep things simple (perhaps boring is the right word?). We prefer to design so that we don't need a dedicated team to maintain any part. You should be productive in Go, and a good knowledge of modern DevOps/SRE practices is expected (IaC, GitOps, etc...).

A great fit would be someone who loves to learn and who liked to learn and build things outside of their studies too.

Our engineering team is remote across Europe, but for this position we propose to meet in-person for work 3 days per week in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Fully remote is difficult (we think) for junior developers.

In 2017 I was hired through HN (although it was through "Who's hiring"). It was for an internship at a startup in a different country. Later that startup got acquired, and then the acquiring company went through its IPO.

I'm not sure if I would have been invited to interview without it (no MIT or Oxford on my CV), so I am glad it existed.

Now that I am posting on "Who is Hiring" for the company I founded: we see high quality applicants for engineering roles.

Hi Shaeq and Samrose - congrats on the launch! Matano looks great.

Out of curiosity, at some point I believe you were working on a predecessor called AppTrail whic tackled (customer-facing) audit logs, it was something I was interested in at the time (and still am! I would've loved to use that).

Would you perhaps be willing to share your learnings from that product, and (I assume) why it evolved into Matano?

The format is only partially invented, it follows Jupytext [0], but adds support for cell metadata. There is no obvious way to get that in fenced codeblocks, especially with the ability to spread it over multiple lines so it plays well with version control.

One more consideration is that it's not "Markdown with code blocks interspersed", one might as well use plaintext or AsciiDoc.

Of course there are tradeoffs.. I wish I had more time to work on it.

One can speed up the AssemblyScript implementation by using StaticArray and adding unchecked() around the indexing - this makes it some 25% faster.

Further by using the smallest stub runtime (= without garbage collector) one can drop filesize by around half, making the smallest implementation even smaller (4.7kb -> 2.8kb uminified). Quite some of that code is the random initialization.. if you do that in JS it may just be smaller than the plain JS implementation.

And still it's a flawed comparison, ASC is using a stable sorting algorithm (with a comparator function). It's difficult to compare approaches based on such small benchmarks, what's really being compared is the built-in sorting algorithm and the bundle size overhead of the different languages.

I think the main direction of $$$K dollar ideas are those in the area of consulting, do those count? It can scale well beyond that, but at that point you're an agency.

I believe that coming up with product ideas that can work at the indie level (bootstrapped/without raising millions) is a matter of training, validating the idea is the hardest part (and not falling into the trap of building it first). The main target of those ideas is often something that can sustain you with under a hundred customers, which rules out building a new social network.

One idea I had recently is on the edge of consumers and businesses: it might make sense to have groupon-like websites for niches. These could be geographical, or around a certain activity. For instance if you are into craft beer, why not create a "deal" website for it? Call up shops that sell brewing equipment, walk in to local bars and ask if they would like to come up with some craft beer tasting event. The model is here that you get a kickback if people take you up on your offers. The more niche the better.. It could be as specific as "young parents who love craft beer and live in New York". That sounds like it could be in the 100k range.

A small plug, for fun I've been writing up some ideas that fit this description [0].
