You do know that Hong Kong was really part of China right? It was taken by the British Empire in 1842 by destroying China in the First Opium War. When the British finally gave it back to China in 1997, a lot of the non-chinese moved out of HK.

I think I know what you mean since I prefer to talk to friends who are genuinely interested in programming and not just a job. Colleagues who are just here for the job I still talk to them but with other topics which I usually learn from as well - as long as you are willing to listen despite what you may think of them.

Can you view Microservices in the same light as multiple companies? Just like when your monolith calls on a third party API that does the payment for you - ain't that also a microservices that happens to involves 2 different individual companies?

I'd like to add. I think the 'open society' mentioned is simply not an opposite to 'closed society'. Imo, there is a big spectrum to how closed or open a society is.

My leftist ideals would say, we shouldn't deny a fellow human access to food or a vacation just because he doesn't have anything in exchanges. Especially today that we have a problem of overbundance, and we are not even optimizing our production, but for profit.

Lol, we a major consumer bank here that have "system error" and everyone's payday salary is mixed up. I imagine some miserable dev tasked to run a batch script and forgot to do some steps.

Makes me think that in a consultancy business, everything hinges on getting the customer to fund your development properly. Ask too much and you'll lose the contract to a competitor.

Certainly when your manager knows that estimates mean estimates, not deadlines. But I guess that's the dilemma in false-agile fixed price big ball of mud consultancy business, you have to give a commitment.
