IoT doesn't have to share any data with third parties... it could be shared with you on the local network or your own server... but many devices make it hard... so you have to be careful.

I didn't know that they are now letting users root Nexus devices without having to use exploits and such, but I was refering to all devices that use the Android OS.

Google should be required to give root to any user that request it for their own device... (anyone should be able to get better control of their own device). It would be easier to control crazy permissions.

Some cities have created public-owned ISPs like Chattanooga's fiber network (community fiber[1]).

You could also become your own ISP.

I stay with Comcast because it is way cheaper then AT&T but with AT&T's VDSL I could get 45mbps (fiber to the neighborhood box, apparently).

Even if you added deaths by police and deaths by terrorists together, it would probably still not be in the top 50 leading causes of death (I'm still trying to find data with all causes of deaths in the US).

I don't think that's possible... it reminds me of Apple saying that they can't decrypt your phone, but it is decrypted when you use it and many apps have permissions to transfer basically everything over the network (and Apple has root too).

I use a RaspberryPi that runs Raspbian and mount my file server's UPnP media directory using djmount. Then start videos on my TV using the OMX Remote app from Android devices (OMX Remote plays videos using the omxplayer app on the RPi). I had to increase the gpu memory on the RaspberryPI so that all my videos would play and once in a while kill omxplayer processes but other then that it works fine. And you go this route, you could still install Kodi if you need the plugins.

I would have more trust in a separate device that has no networking capabilities.

The device could instead have a display that displays a password, QR code, one-time-key, etc... and then you would scan it using a webcam or your phone (or type it manually).
