I agree, but let's not forget that the more (semantically) obvious reason why people get locked out of wealth has more to do with not being able to take it than with not being able to produce it.

I believe replacing "weapons" for "systems" makes the statement more in line with concrete reality.

I upvoted when I had read up to where you wrote "doesn't help with." I felt I was reading my own thoughts when I read the last two sentences. I think it is not just software design that will become shortsighted we may even see less interest in improving programming languages. I've always hoped for people to come up with some mathematical insights (beyond functional programming) that will describe code organizing structures in a more sensible way, so that experience no longer appears as the main argument for software patterns being tools to manage complexity. Now a programming language is just another language to be modeled, and its texts generated and proofread by a fallible human.

I agree with the sentiment that there is significant absurdity hiding beneath all the economic abstraction around employment and investment, which obscures the origin of money as a requirement. The way I see it (and this is a rather centuries old observation) is that the economic system is set up so that most of the population requires earning money for their survival. Earning money is a social requirement not a biological one. But if the resources are cheaper now that money is more valuable, what is the problem with earning less money for one's work? The problem is that some people would rather keep charging the same for what they sell. If one doesn't own much, then one can't afford waiting for a better deal. In this situation having power means owning money, houses, land, machinery and little debt. This makes workers require the same salary in order to survive and perform their jobs, this contributes to the (abstract pseudo-)problems of less employment, less consumption, less debt obligations being fulfilled. The real problems is on the one hand the resources required for survival being out of reach, and on the other resources, machinery and skills going to waste. For many, directly tackling the real problems may come dangerously close to disregarding social requirements. Hence, we keep talking about this problems in abstract terms, so that important members of society can live off the rent, by convincing the rest, by whatever means necessary, of the survival-money exchange rate. Money is a peaceful mean to make them follow orders.

Your comment about the political climate made me remember this. I cannot find the specific reference but in one of his lectures (on Youtube), Sapolsky talks about how some gay people felt offended in the 70's by research about the relation between brain structure and sexual orientation, since they felt it treated their sexual orientation as a pathology. Sapolsky contrasts it with the more recent enthusiasm about similar research, because people felt it would prove being gay was not a matter of choice or bad nurture. In political contexts, people blindly replace connotation for implication. Whereas implication is a concern of Logic (and hence, Science), connotation is a concern of intuition (or should I say, instinct) about constantly changing cultural ideals.

That sounds interesting. I would have a job by now if someone valued the fact that I like memorizing Ancient Greek poetry :) Instead I failed my last interview because I took longer than half an hour to implement JSON indented stringify in JS and did not use template literals and a switch statement. It was my first technical interview ever after 10 years of developing software. I did not expect how much being watched and trying to fulfill several unclear expectations would hinder my performance on a problem, which I would otherwise consider very easy.

This reminds of what Filtered.AI does. Except that it does it for some sort of automated job interview. When interviewing through them, I had to install a Chrome Plugin that recorded audio, video, and browsing activity at all moments. But I guess they're just trying to fix the software engineer interview process.

Here is an anecdote of something that taught me, being a person at the time more unfamiliar with US culture, that perhaps in the US childhood is not seen in the same way as in my country and others (I mean just look at this map https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convention_on_the_Rights_of_th... ). 13 years ago I went to an interview at the embassy to apply for my student visa. I was asked at some point about what I did during the 2 months I had spent in the US the last time I went. I very naively proceeded to truthfully describe my activities during those two months, one of which consisted of going to a public school for a short time (maybe three weeks). That was enough to get my visa denied and my tourist visa canceled. It did not make any sense to me that something so innocuous, which I did when I was eleven years old under the command of adults and not from my own will, would need to have, 7 years later, such "consequences." The interviewer of course questioned my knowledge of that word, and demanded proof that I had paid something to the school. I communicated with the school principal and managed to get a receipt of a $14 payment for buying a t-shirt, and got my visa which I had to renew after a year.
