At iMetalx we're going through product discovery to solve problems for people in tactical environments. We are currently funded by the military, but we're working to build products with both military and civilian uses.

We work to understand the tactical domain (military, but also fire, police, search and rescue) and the current solutions. Our main focus is on communications, networking, robotics, and android app development.

We're a small team consisting of a CEO (business development), CTO (product lead / customer relations), software developer, and part-time software architect.

We're looking to hire a software developer, who in addition has some of the following (in order of importance):

    1. military experience (especially field / deployment experience)
    2. fire / police / search and rescue experience
    3. python
    4. android app development
    5. Linux
    6. networking
    7. robotics
    8. electrical engineering
Our ideal candidate is a junior software engineer who has been deployed and is excited to help solve some of the pain points they had in the field.

Other requirements:

    - US citizen
    - In-office full time
    - Can work autonomously and either has start-up experience or wants to develop that mentality
Our hiring process is casual. We're hiring for fit and aligned mission. 2 - 3 hour take home tech assignment in language of your choice. Looking for somebody to start within 2 - 3 weeks.

My method has been to audit a university class, do lots of practice problems, and find a support group of people to regularly work with

If youve taken say, trig, but are rusty, dont bog down on trying to relearn upfront. If it comes up when learning something else, then relearn whats necessary. The problem with this is if you're in a scheduled class where you might get behind. The benefit is that when you go on to upper level math, its a necessary skill to relearn some things quickly

I spent the last year developing the software and hardware for a smart, autonomous irrigation system for small farms. I'd like to move into a pure software role. I'm currently re-implementing part of git with Scala / ZIO.

I set up wifi on 130 acres on a mix of solar and grid, wired Ethernet, "wireless" Ethernet, and mesh wifi. We have two shakey ISPs. I ping all network devices every ten minutes and plot the results over time. Has helped me tremendously when troubleshooting

I'm trying to learn Haskell, but don't know anything about app development. Ultimately, I want to iterate and use this project to learn how to write idiomatic, production quality Haskell, and learn app development.

I was auditing a grad class at UT that used this book, then corona hit. Still plan to finish it eventually though

I'm not even really sure where I would get started working on an implementation or working on a paper. Are these projects open source?

I'm self-taught too, and strictly interested in research-focused CS masters or PhD programs (as opposed to industry-focused cash-cows). I think I'm mostly interested in studying PL or program synthesis, but I'm also open to other ideas. How did you make that jump from self-taught to qualified for a PhD program?

I think that CS vs SWE thing happens with a lot of people, and I got caught there, too. Luckily, I ended up really liking CS and it introduced me to the field, whereas otherwise I would've gone for SWE. There really needs to be a 'teachYourselfSWE' for people who are into that.

I strongly recommend OSSU! Both books and MOOCs have their place, and sometimes a MOOC is easier to stay motivated, provided a schedule, and exercises of appropriate number and difficulty.

I really like reading books too, but sometimes the completion-ist part of me is too strong and I shouldn't really do all the exercises.

I just got hired on a ~100 acre farm to basically do this. We have one other person who's been working on a auto weed puller (autonomous driving over rows and computer vision to pick weeds). Would love to talk more about this! my email is zach_asmith@yahoo.com

Just finished endurance about the first group to try and overland Antarctica. Failed, then was out at ice and seat for nearly 2 years. Just started endurance by Scott Kelly. So far it's good but the Antarctica one was better

I'd say you don't have to spend any money for some of the best classes, but it matters what you're interested in / specialty. Check out OSSU on GitHub for a lot of really good free courses. Only time I'd recommend spending money is if there a specific course within a specialization

I'm reading "bachteria to Bach" by Dennett and he talks about this I believe. Birds that are born/raised without their mother can build a species-like nest their first year, and will build a better nest the following year, but will build a better nest the first year if they aren't taken from their mother. So the book talks about learning vs hard wired. The idea in the book is that nest building is both, but seemed quite a bit hard wired
