absolutely love forums! It's also a kind of a rite of passage for devs to create a forum if you are learning new language (back in the days) - an advanced version of "Create your first blog" type of thing?

A while back ago, I created HN Plus (hn[.]plus) (for some reason it gets blocked) - anyway, wanted to give people a way to create their own HN clone - still being used today and it was a very interesting exercise to replicate all the niche features of HN.

I've signed up with Ollama to experiment with these open source models. For the past 3 months, it's just been experimenting, trying it out. GLM is the first model that I am using on a daily basis to do my coding work (as well as using Claude). It's good - I've been maxing out my Ollama usage limits everyday :)

You can easily clone HN using other forum tools (discourse, discord, HN+) and start your own? Or HN provides APIs that are quite powerful.

I do mostly CRUD apps with Laravel and Vue. Nothing too complicated. Allows users to post stuff with images and files. I’ve moved ALL of my files from S3 to R2 in the past 2 years. It’s been slow as any migrations are but painless.

But most importantly for an indie dev like me the cost became $0.

We argue about agile processes, front end frameworks, languages, microservices, revenues, fundings, options, shares, hustles and all and at the end of the day we return back to the earth.

Uni super customer here in Aus. Didn’t know what it was but kept receiving emails every day when they were trying to resolve this. Only found out from news on what’s actually happened. Feels like they downplayed the whole thing as “system downtime”. Imagine something actually happened to people’s money and billions of dollars that were saved as their superannuation fund.

I had a bug in my code during my research degree. I was able to get some results and write it up as a thesis, submit it and get my degree.

That was almost 15 years ago. But to this day, every now and then I feel a little guilty about getting that degree because I haven’t truly solved that bug.

I launched https://app.scholars.io to get latest research from arxiv on specific topics I’m interested in so I can filter out ones that I’m not interested. Hopefully it will help someone find research activities other than LLM.

Suggestion noted, but please understand that we've done (and still are doing) our fair bit of experiments on what works for whom.

For example, when we want to tell HN users of Postatic, the most effective way we found was to tell them that they can create their own HN site.

I guess for Reddit users, it would be better to target it as "create your own Reddit".

"Community" is good, but there are a plenty of sites that use that word and we also need to stand our.

So right now, we're displaying what's been working the best according to the data - surely it'll evolve.

There are a few options I suppose.

It's a site that let you create online communities (think of it as 'creating your own hackernews'
