You don't know they won't shut down. And how does this compare to a local accounting firm?
Bench just forced me to switch to an annual contract a few days ago too. What a bunch of crooks.
Pilot looks very expensive!
what service did you move to?
What are the best alternatives?
Paraphrasing Seth Godin: do you want your heart surgeon greeting you before surgery by authentically telling you about the big fight he just had with his wife this morning?
Try using cursor to write games using natural language. It takes some iteration to get what you want, but kids seem to love it.
Who has time to listen to all these podcasts?
What would your choice be?
This is unexpectedly great.
I run a similar sized software business and found generatepress.com. I set up a wordpress site using their visual builder tools and pre-made components, hosted on wpengine.com so everything is always up to date. Took a few weekends, but this is more than adequate these days. Logo came from upwork.com
I also feel your pain. I've had a bad experience with a top python/django agency that turned out to have a CEO "incubating" several startups to compete with Amazon, while also running an agency. I got bad vibes early but kept pressing on, and learned my lesson the hard way.
You might also consider upgrading your keyboard. The Leopold FC660C with topre silent keys is pretty great.
Herman miller embody is great. The steelcase gesture is almost as good and it is less expensive. I have both. If I could buy only one I'd probably get the steelcase.
This is really great!
is there a textbook you'd recommend for learning the content of this course...for those of us who can't go to CMU to take it?
The Constellation CEO also writes an annual letter that is packed with useful information, just like Buffet except for SaaS.

I just read this the other day about caring for elderly abusive parents and found it refreshing:
https://slate.com/human-interest/2013/02/abusive-parents-wha...
I caught my grandfather's caretaker, along with my aunt and uncle (who had POA), stealing more than half his net worth. This began after a stroke left him cognitively impaired with 24/7 care. I did a complete financial audit and there were some minimal phone scam payments, but by far the bulk of the financial exploitation came from the caretaker and family members. He was left so financially ruined that I had to move him out of his home at age 89.
I ended up petitioning for guardianship and won. This was a painful and long process but it was ultimately the only logical choice.
Part of the problem is the secretive nature of finances. My aunt and uncle did most of their theft by putting undue influence on my grandfather to get him to sign things and then claim he was the one making all of the decisions. This undue influence included threatening him that they would abandon him if he didn't do what they wanted. The court overwhelmingly showed his incapacity which made these lies obvious.
To make matters worse, there were over a dozen amendments to my grandfathers estate documents within a 2 year period. You'd think there would be a lawyer that says no to these things, but it turned out my grandfahter's lawyer was later found complicit. He was disbarred because he got caught stealing money from several of his elderly clients.
And my grandfather's financial advisor knew about all the abuse as well, but did not do anything about it. He claimed he was alerting the POA (my uncle) about it all along, but he wasn't able to do anything else.
When I reported it to the police they did open up an investigation, but they put it on the backburner. Why? Because elder abuse is not well understood by law enforcement. When the culprits are the victims family members, it is just not taken as seriously.
The bottom line is that elder abuse is a complex problem. It isn't one that can be solved with technology alone. It will take a combination of technology, the law, and awareness. Even then, it will be difficult to solve.
Immanuel Kant's critique of pure reason
Fantastic summary. What do you think about Hiten Shah's solution which is to use hourly estimates and in depth upfront technical research?

Justin - you mentioned that investments bankers take 1-2% of the selling price. What percentage do all the rest of the closing costs take up (lawyers, etc)? What are these other closing costs?
Sean Snaith from UCF is quoted in the article calling bitcoin a tulip bubble.
Back in 2007 I watched his presentation in person where he said the U.S. would experience a "soft landing" and nothing major.
A few months later the stock market crashed 60%.
Economists are terrible at predictions.
Usually the same number of economists forecast continued growth right before recession.
You also never hear about breach of fiduciary duty by the trustees. This happens all the time in the U.S. and it's difficult to catch because it's all private. This is particularly true for the elderly.
I wouldn't want to rely on offshore laws to enforce trustee fraud.

There have been many questions about how these crowdfunding sites compare to a vanguard REIT index. Taxes haven't been mentioned. Don't be so pedantic.
Spot on. Taxes have been missing from this entire HN discussion. A primary reason for investing directly in real estate (even in a syndication as a passive investor) is to get the tax benefits. For example, with the "eREITS" from fundrise mentioned above, these are just like public non-traded REITS (ie no depreciation, interest deduction, or 1031 exchange).
Often with a strong commercial real estate project you can show taxable losses but still get positive cash flow. Why? Because of generous IRS depreciation treatment of the improvements. Then, when you get to the end of the investment and you can sell it, you can just defer the capital gains taxes indefinitely by using a 1031 exchange. This can be done until you die, when your heirs will get your property with a "Stepped up basis", effectively eliminating the capital gains tax altogether.
You can't get this with REITS. Doesn't matter if they are publicly traded, non-traded, private, or the new fad eREITS.
