yes but the pop industry is just one facet of music as a transcendental cultural/spiritual/secular meaning-making expression activity as a whole. its a place where both bob dylan ans taylor swift can exist on the same plane, the implications of such cannot and would never be able to be reduced to data. "if the only tool you have..." not to undermine the implications of complex automation as symptomatic of the current epoch, but I would argue that art offers a materially grounded experience irreducible to data. it doesnt mean that the affects of art wont be harnessed by corporate interests in ever accentuated ways, it seems like an obvious and natural development; on one level its simply the cyclical production of crappification occurring in tighter spirals of output/dynamism, weeee!

great quote - and the dialectic is that it is only through the most "individuated" individuals that such work can be brought forth (the Frankfurt school would say during Modernity, such individuals are not so much distinct, but the most alienated)

I understand the pragmatism but....it took me around a decade+ of doing crap jobs, that I hated, in order to subsidize the pursuit of "my passion" Its now been 6 years where I have been able to make a living doing what I love and I have to say, it was worth the risk. Do I recommend putting all your eggs in one basket, and going through life without a 'Plan B' - no...but the twist is, the maniac dreamers, whose passion run into the gamut of iconoclasm - those people simply will not (or more realistically) cannot abide by pragmatism.. but this obsessive nature is usually symptomatic of greater 'issues' (that then may bear fruit) and everyone who forges their own path in such a way must pay the toll and suffer the consequences (think starving artists, alienated high functioning individuals, persons inhabiting or transgressive practices, etc)

Toxic Productivity 4 years ago

Oof as someone who makes a living as an artist this article hit hard. There's little to no separation between what I do and who I am. Been thinking about inhabiting character modes/avatars as different modes of output hopefully without introducing some schizoid element(?)

Furthermore the pigment sepia, a beautiful brown color used historically in inks and paint, is derived by removing the ink sac from the cuttlefish (it shoots ink like a squid).

Although it has largely been replaced by synthetic alternatives, you can still obtain traditional sepia from places like Kremer's Pigments - which is a supplier of historic pigments, mediums, and recipes (used by conservationists and artists who like to make their own paint).

I find the brown color of the traditional sepia to be extremely beautiful, the dried pigment has an extremely pungent odor, quite similar to the dried squid you might find at your local Asian fish market.

Now that I'm making money and am 'successful' doing what I love, I have realized that nothing could have prepared me for the contradictory reality of the making a living off of something that is deeply personal/inward directed.

Even if I find myself holding together what often feels like two antithetical parts, the rewards (for now) of being able to pursue the fulfillment of my 'life activity' and what I am naturally oriented towards outweigh the dissonance.

However, a pitfall is if your life activity is altered so much by capital that its creative function ceases to exist except to generate more capital; perpetuate its system - the best outcome is where capital accelerates your 'life's activity' transformative potential instead of neutralizing it.

My personal solution is to turn my back on a lot of the expectations and niceties of my work and instead focus most of my energy on creation.

Square Banking 5 years ago

Regardless, if Square were to offer legitimate 2FA I would probably feel more comfortable using their debit card for daily life..Can't seem to find any details regarding this on the FAQ though.
