Thanks for this Alex! Will definitely check this out. DynamoDBGuide.com was a huge help to me when I was learning serverless last year to build wanderium.com. There's definitely a learning curve for DynamoDB but the performance is really good.
Do you talk about the best way to do aggregations in your book? That's one of the more annoying downsides of DynamoDB that I've kind of had to hack my way around. (I combine DynamoDB streams with a Lambda function to increment/decrement a count)
Very sad indeed. I haven't found anything comparable with global coverage or historical data support that's reasonably priced or has an easy to use self serve UI.
It's unfortunate for Hipmunk to just be turned off despite its founders trying to buy it back: https://skift.com/2020/01/14/hipmunk-co-founders-spurned-by-...
I remember being pretty amazed by its UI back when it launched, but unfortunately has fallen off the last few years.
Flights are hard, and it's why we're staying away from flights at first for my travel startup Wanderium (wanderium.com). Instead we're focusing first on the "long tail" of travel issues: visas, vaccinations, safety, local customs, infrastructure, etc. By aggregating all of this data in a single place and presenting them in a single, personalized experience we think it can save travelers many hours per trip.
Check out our beta if you're curious: https://www.wanderium.com
I find it a bit funny how many people in here think Disney sucks now. The tech/developer crowd clearly is not their audience (which is fine). I personally think Disney has done a good job with the Marvel acquisition by taking some pretty unknown characters and turning them into heroes on par with Spiderman which 10-15 years ago would be unbelievable. The Last Jedi on the other hand I thought was meh. Leia floating through space? That's pushing it.
Anecdotally, I was just at Disneyland on a weekday recently and it was as packed as can be, and among my friends who aren't at in tech many of them are diehard Disney fans and are super excited for Disney+ (especially their new show Mandalorian). Considering Disney's track record at the box office the last 5 years I expect Disney+ to do well.
In most states dealership cars typically have dealer plates which only allow them to be driven during test drives or by dealership employees. How do you handle that?
I listened to this podcast series too! So, so interesting, especially as an Asian American and understanding how that period of Japanese colonialism affected the rest of the region.
For a great in depth but still understandable look at the race to zero emissions, including carbon capture technologies, I highly recommend this series from Quartz: https://qz.com/on/race-to-zero-emissions/
It seems increasingly likely with every one of these reports that our usage of plastics has lead to the large drop in sperm counts the last few decades: https://www.gq.com/story/sperm-count-zero
Handmaid's tale, anyone?
If you think London is good, wait til you try the subway in big Asian cities like Taipei, Tokyo, or Seoul.
This does look useful, thank you!
But the whole point of me using Contentful is that a non-developer will have an easy time editing content within Contentful vs. having to set up a local way of accessing those markdown/yml files through a git repo. Or do you somehow abstract that away?
How does this compare to Contentful? I've been trying to combine their headless CMS with Middleman but it hasn't been that easy to use, although the experience I'm trying to create is non-standard (imagine a normal blog post but with cards inserted throughout). Plus, the cheapest paid plan is $249/month which is really hefty when compared to the competition. Their free tier does give you a good amount of features though and their admin UI is the best.
I was planning to deploy my site onto Netlify once done. Wondering if maybe your CMS is a better alternative to Contentful and I should just combine services.
We've been working on a product more oriented towards "everyday" remembering instead of hardcore educational learning called Remembered.io (https://remembered.io)
It's meant for use cases like reminding yourself about lessons you've learned in books, to keep yourself inspired, or for encoding tidbits from short term to long term memory.
Here's a recent Lifehacker post about us: http://lifehacker.com/remembered-io-offers-smart-reminders-t...
Thanks! That was helpful. I agree we can do a better job with the copy on our landing page.
I use Anki as well for learning Chinese, but the use case is different for me.
What YC company are you referring to?
Hey HN, we built this recently because we saw a gap not being filled by calendar/note/todo apps. We noticed that even after writing down notes/ideas we wanted to remember, we’d forget them because our brains just aren’t good at keeping things top of mind. It’s possible to set manual reminders but it quickly becomes too much effort.
Would love to hear what people think (constructive feedback please). Happy to answer any questions too. Thanks!
Hey everyone, here's a personal project we just launched. To learn more about the product, get 10% off, and see nifty animations: https://remembered.io/invites/jono892
Here's also a blog post talking about why we thought this was a good idea: https://medium.com/@jobosapien/introducing-remembered-io-ff5...
Would love to hear any and all thoughts, thanks!

This was the first thing I noticed too. It seems like an odd mix between Bootstrap itself and Facebook's styling. For example, the box-shadow when focusing on text input.
Yup, agreed. Here's a great Freakonomics podcast on the upside of quitting that's quite illuminating: http://www.freakonomics.com/2011/09/30/new-freakonomics-radi...
Yup, 3rd time here too. This was our first time applying with TwoSides (http://www.twosides.co). No worries though, we should all keep plowin' along.
From what I understand, Chamath is okay with cashing out by selling your stock, but what the AirBnB founders are doing is just paying themselves a dividend of $20M (essentially just paying themselves a lump sum out of their funding round and not affecting any of their stock). Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Hi HN, we're launching a new way for you to compare your viewpoints with the candidates of Election 2012 on TwoSides, a social debate platform. This launch also coincides with us opening up our beta to the public. Would love to hear any and all feedback you guys have, as we're always looking to improve!
Thank you!
We use d3 extensively here at TwoSides and love it.
Here's some examples: http://www.twosides.co/issues/185-should-euthanasia-or-physi... http://www.twosides.co/jono (the venn diagram/bar graph wouldn't be transparent if you had an account)
Thanks for the feedback! I've discovered how hard positioning is, so #2 is really helpful to me.
TwoSides is a social debate platform that helps you see every side of an issue and meet like-minded people. It was born mainly out of our frustration finding balanced information, and we'd love your feedback so we can improve.

The reason why coaches like Tedford and Howland get paid so much is because the amount of revenue they bring in for their schools is worth much, much more. It's the same reason Fortune 500 CEO's get paid millions because the value a good CEO can create for their company is often worth hundreds of millions if not billions of dollars. So paying their CEO just a few million is a relative bargain. Same concept with D1 football and bball coaches.
Where in SV are you? I'm about 5 months out of college and working on a startup too, would be down to meet up. Send me an email ambition2188 at gmail
Also, if you have a +1 are you not allowed to use the shuttle?
