Hey, I'm David. I'm in my 4th year of Software Engineering at Cal Poly SLO and am looking for professional experience outside of class/personal projects.

I'm specifically interested in exploring any lower level applications. I have strong OS/Computer Architecture fundamentals and am very passionate about going deeper within those areas. Some of my projects include a non-preemptive threading library in C, a handwired breadboard CPU, and some Minix3 filesystem image cli tools.

Open to internships or full time roles.

Is it just me or does this paper read like it was run through ChatGPT? Kind of ironic if true.

If I recall correctly, Windows isn’t very user-friendly either.

My take as a current uni student.

This is all absolutely true. I have yet to meet anyone who doesn’t use chat. Some people use it as a personal tutor, most use it as a shortcut to finish assignments. Regardless, everyone is using it. LLM’s are great when used as a tool. Bouncing ideas and asking conceptual questions is a great way to learn (it really is as valuable as talking to a professor for a lot of questions). But how do you convince students to use LLMs as a learning tool instead of a cheating tool?

I think the solution is simple. Most people are short cutting with LLMs because they want a good grade, and they want it easy. So, stop with grading. The primary incentive for going to a class should be to pickup some new knowledge and skills, not to pickup a good grade.

Trump's proposed executive order just gives TikTok more time "so that a deal could be made." Honestly I don't understand how TikTok is able to restore service now before the executive order or even the inaugaration has occured.

Yeah social media has gotten very predatory, especially since short form content blew up due to TikTok. I’ll have chats with people that are just an exchange of instagram reels and reactions.

HN is my only form of social media now on my phone. Now, it’s time to build meaningful relationships in my life again.

The FOMO is to get you to download the app, make an account, and deter you from uninstalling.

The real game is to keep you on the platform when you compulsively open it. You go in to check in on your second cousins, you stay to scroll through their TikTok clone or whatever attention harvesting algorithm is trendy currently.

A game that is overrun by cheaters makes it less fun to regular players. If regular players don’t want to play your game, it ends up being a hacker circle jerk before the servers stop getting consistent players at which point the game is dead. And a dead game is not interesting to potential buyers which affects the publishers revenue stream.

Plates not matching is a major red flag, no?

You don’t even need self driving cars for cabin surveillance. Modern cars are already being equipped with data harvesting suites and selling your data. What’s one step further for 24/7 audio video surveillance?

Copilot comes free for students through GitHubs student developer pack[0]. I’ve gotten to try it out and I’ve found it to just be a great cheating tool in my classes.

Most assignments done by students are basic problems that have been solved tens of thousands of times and could be found everywhere all over GitHub.

Assignments where you have to write algorithms like bubblesort or binary search are as easy as typing the function signature and then having copilot fill in the rest.

Therefore, using copilot as a student will make you worse at programming, since you are robbed of the fundamental thinking skills that come from solving these problems.

Unless your current OS is interfering with the productivity or utility of your machine, I see no practical reason to switch.

Been using this for a while on my 2018 iPad Pro for college.

I just SSH into my pc at home and am able to work on all my assignments with neovim. Works well enough to save me from having to buy a laptop since I was able to get this iPad for ~$300 locally on Facebook marketplace. Would recommend to non-power users on a budget (e.g. college students)

This assumes that AI will continue to improve at the same pace. GPT3 released November 2022 and yes, there have been staggering improvements since then.

My intuition is that we’re beginning to reach the bounds of what we can do with LLMs. All we’ve been doing is applying the technology to other mediums (images, video, code) and yeah we’ve been seeing some really awesome/terrifying results. It all looks like it’s 80% of the way there, from which the first thought is that in a couple of years it’ll be 100% of the way there and we’ll all be jobless.

This reminds me of the full self driving hype. The demos were so exciting and all that was left was getting these last couple edge cases worked out and then we’d all be in self-driving taxi pods….

Would I want my children to be at risk of school shootings?

Everyone is at risk of everything. Since the beginning of time.

Would I want my children to have to deal with the fact that I can’t afford to pay health care in the only country where it’s not free?

I agree the healthcare situation in the US (where I’m guessing you’re based) is not ideal but it’s far from the worst. Medicaid exists. CHIP exists. Obamacare exists. A competent enough parent would be capable of efficiently using their resources if their childs health was at stake.

The internet is a double edged sword where it can both be a blessing and a curse. It’s 100% possible to raise a kid to have a healthy relationship with the internet. Just don’t give them an iPad at 5.

Housing crisis…

Yeah housing crisis is hard too. But markets fluctuate and who knows what it’s going to look like by the time a kid grows up to be of home-purchasing age.

I’m sad you have such a negatively skewed view of the world. I don’t think today’s world is “extremely ugly” and “extremely unfair.” Compared to life 100 years ago, I think we’ll be ok.

3.7. Don't Take Notes on a Computer

I found that being able to type notes saves a lot of time compared to handwriting notes (especially if you can type fast enough). The main cognitive benefit of typing notes (that I have found) is being able to quickly edit and reword what you're writing. It's not practical to erase and re-write a handwritten bullet point during a lecture, but if you're using a word editor, you're able to easily tune the wording of your summary as you gain a better understanding of the topic. Being able to quickly iterate on your notes as you're learning is enough for me to stick to typing my notes.

I love my Volkswagen Golf wagen. It’s a 2019 and apart the last generation made available in the US. It has all the essentials without the pointless gimmicks or “quirks” of modern cars, it’s the kind of slow car that’s fun to drive fast (6 speed manual), while also being able to haul a truck-load of ikea furniture. I really do not look forward to the day I have to retire the thing.

I love the feeling of overcoming a problem or some other challenge that I had previously been unable to overcome. It’s always amazing to see your own determination pay off.

I love dusk and dawn. I always go on a short 20 minute walk just to be able to indulge in the pretty colors that the sky wears during this short transition between day/night.

I genuinely do not see the point you’re trying to make. Is it that pollution == lower birth rate? I’d imagine there are many factors besides pollution that may influence why certain regions have more birth rates than others.

There are 100 things I could put on a list of potential causes for the mental illness epidemic. “Overcrowding and fighting over limited resources” would not be on that list.

We just can’t stop developing methods of hijacking our brains… it’s the holy grail of business. All we can do is try our best to recognize it, avoid it, and keep kids away from it.

I imagine if you’re ok with exploiting desperate gamblers for profits you’re also probably fine with bribing whoever to maintain those profits. Money is a helluva drug

We do have to think of the kids though. They are absolutely our future and will have to be capable of taking over the economy and our issues.

Children are a non negligible demographic of gaming oriented content and are vulnerable to profit seeking corporations and influencers capable of manipulating them. The target towards children is implicit unfortunately.
