Imagine the article was about a right wing anti-trans activist. The criticism would be that the NYT was providing a platform to someone that doesn’t deserve it.

But this water witch is clearly a fraud. They are giving a platform to someone who does not deserve it because that are ripping off people. They are humanizing a fraudster.

Some decisions aren’t mathematical. Sometimes it’s better to make a decision based on whether or not it makes sense for the family as opposed to dollars and sense.

If your wife wants to buy a place, I suggest finding a compromise to figure out how to make both parties happy.

The militarization of the police in the US is a huge problem that is out of control. I was extremely disappointed that Obama didn’t not only rein in this militarization but effectively made it worse. We are now having to deal with a generation of cops who think they are GI Joe but don’t have the training. This is why so many unarmed people are getting shot by the cops, because they start their day thinking they are in Fallujah instead of Cleveland.

It’s not “hot season”. It was a historically abnormal heat wave. I lived in Vancouver. You don’t normally see temperatures like that.

It doesn’t have to reproduce right away, that’s just unrealistic. But the larger amounts of free space will mean a land grab by the survivors. That’s how it works in nature.

If the climate changes and the water heats up then the ecosystem will be replaced by those animals that would survive in warmer water. That’s science.

Exactly. What is misinformation? What you define as misinformation right now could be information in a few months.

Entire discussions on things like ivermectin to treat covid were banned from YouTube as “misinformation”. Now some studies are coming out that might show that it’s not. At least it deserves a discussion but it has been censored as misinformation. So we lost an entire year of treating people around the world because SOMEONE deemed ivermectin misinformation??

What about the Wuhan lab origination? Last year that was derided as conspiracy theories and misinformation, but now it’s basically accepted as fact.

Who determines what is misinformation? What if Trump wins again or someone worse like Tom Cotton? And they set up a government panel that they decide is misinformation and companies like Google need to follow it? Who determines who is spreading misinformation now?

10 years ago a low fat diet was deemed “heart healthy”. Now that is classified as misinformation. Should low fat diets be censored by Google?

This is the problem. What you thought was misinformation is only really a few studies away from being flipped around.

The fact that Silicon Valley thrives without non-competes proves that they are unnecessary. It’s just a way for employers to put their claws in employees. If non-competes came with guaranteed 100% salary during the non-compete time, that would be more palatable.

We should just let all these forest fires burn themselves out at this point, regardless of how big it gets. The idea that people would sacrifice their lives to save structures in the face of the full force of nature is stupid.

Evacuate everyone in the area, divert firefighting resources to home the evacuees, and let it burn out. The silver lining is that the area won’t be hospitable for a large forest fire for a while.

How can they move the source code from open to closed source? They don’t own the contributions. I guess they hope the small contributors won’t mount a legal challenge or they will pay them off to transfer the rights?

Seems like a lot of effort for this. What is their ultimate end game? I’m not sure that this is worth all the money they have invested is it?

Somehow I have a different App Store account than my iCloud account than my Apple ID account. And I have some music from my older App Store account that I don’t want to spend hours and possibly corrupt my newer App Store account with. It’s a big mess and honestly I can’t remember ever making a decision to use different accounts. It just kind of happened.

I took no offense to what you said. I think solar leases are a complete scam. The sales person sold the elderly couple an undersized system that left them still paying for electricity from PG&E every month. And a few years from now, I will be paying more per kWh than from PG&E. But the delta won’t be huge so based on the discount it was okay with me. But yeah it’s incredible that Solar city sold these people this lease, it’s practically useless for them and it’s definitely useless for me.

We got a significant discount over comps so even if we pay full price to pay them off we still did well, so I was okay with it. It’s still very annoying though having to deal with Tesla. I can’t believe they are still in business with their business practices. My friend has a solar roof contract that Tesla is trying to double the price on, it’s insane.

I use Apple CarPlay almost exclusively now, and will never buy a car that doesn’t support it anymore.

When using navigation, I will often use Apple Maps. Their biggest advantage is that their directions will say “after the next stop sign, turn right at the following traffic light.” Thats so much more useful than most other Map apps. So in the city, I prefer Apple Maps. If I need the shortest route including traffic or if I need to drive fast and watch out for cops, I will use Waze.

This is probably the singly best written and most realistic article I’ve read on HN ever and I’ve been on HN for a long long time. It’s so realistic I wonder if the author took it from his diary or something. Everything about it is supersaturated with authenticity and teaches better than any other article I’ve read. Kudos to the author, and I would love to see this style of article take off.

I know several that have left for Texas. I know one that left for Michigan. One that left for San Diego. A few that left for Seattle. So it’s very real. Whether or not it moves the needle though is the bigger question. I myself would never move unless some sort of environmental catastrophe hit it, like forest fires or no more water which is actually a possibility.

We spent decades trying to get rid of cigarettes and it worked and now we let this fucking Juul through the front door. It’s as if we haven’t learned a fucking thing in decades, and the fact that this founder is celebrated in Silicon Valley sickens me. He just found another opportunity to hook kids on nicotine for another few generations and now he’s a fucking billionaire. Fuck that guy.

Why not just have employee cameras so that they can both verify the workstation set up as well as make sure they’re actually working for the full 8 hours a day?

Sounds like a great YC startup idea. They can use machine learning and AI to calculate the times that the employee is sitting at their workstation, have eye tracking to make sure that they are looking at the screen, and analyze the network traffic and keystrokes to make sure that people aren’t goofing off on HN or Reddit.
