I’m not so sure mocking is really that on point, a tool used to understand avalanche safety should be safe. The product copy highlights safety and the value of providing a recommendation instead of having to collate and synthesize different data yourself.

Avalanche risk and its management are unknown to me, but not to ski patrols, experienced backcountry trekkers, scientists, and national weather services of many countries, etc. I saw no evidence of trials to test to see how the technology performs against real conditions.

If you can’t trust this product’s recommendations within some margin of safety then it’s value proposition disappears.

Why not market it instead as an experiment and seek some way of collecting data to improve the process or develop a model fine tuned to the inputs?

Is it just me, or does it seem extremely dangerous to market: “Strata doesn't just show the data. It makes the call.”

The page states it’s powered by Claude with nothing I could see that relates to its performance, metrics, processes, testing, etc. for something expected to be used in a safety application.

Azure Network Availability Issues

Starting at approximately 16:00 UTC, we began experiencing Azure Front Door issues resulting in a loss of availability of some services. We suspect that an inadvertent configuration change as the trigger event for this issue. We are taking two concurrent actions where we are blocking all changes to the AFD services and at the same time rolling back to our last known good state.

We have failed the portal away from Azure Front Door (AFD) to mitigate the portal access issues. Customers should be able to access the Azure management portal directly.

We do not have an ETA for when the rollback will be completed, but we will update this communication within 30 minutes or when we have an update.

yes, and it seems that at least for some login.microsoftonline.com is down too, which is part of the Entra login / SSO flow.

It is interesting to see the differential across different tenants in different geographies:

- on a US tenant I am unable to access login.microsoftonline.com and the login flow stalls on any SSO authentication attempt.

- on a European tenant, probably germany-west, I am able to login and access the Azure portal.

Would this also be true for electrostatic speakers as well? Though would probably would require greater gain/amplification or, potentially the application of some kind of bias voltage for the capacitive diaphragm of the speaker.

Just speculation based on the shared operating principal with condenser microphones

Many embedded systems use SWupdate to manage this, which can hook into uboot.

I might recommend sending to the landing page or a description, I am not sure how many folks will install a TestFlight without more information.

I met Mr. Engelbart once as a child when my mother worked at SRI in the 90s/early 2000s. At the time I had seen the mouse prototype while wandering the halls and on some open house day I was introduced to him. He listened to me, a young kid, talk excitedly about technology for what must've been awhile and was very encouraging and kind. While I was excited about computers at the time I had no idea the significance of his ideas until I was an adult.

Looking back on it, I am awed by the kindness he showed to some random kid.

The way to do this is just to become a member of one of NPR’s member stations, which provide the network its main source of funding (with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting being a distant second, IIRC). The member stations are also responsible for creating much of the content distributed by the network, though National NPR in DC produces the major drive-time news shows (Morning Edition and All Things Considered).

I did, the agent tried to tell me that I had to use the facial recognition system. I pointed at the clear sign which said it was optional. She called a supervisor and they checked my ID as normal.

I fly often for work and have only seen this once out in the wild.

Besides having to insist that it was optional, there was no additional screening necessary.

Theremin (yes, the same) invented a device using an infrared beam directed at windows which was able to capture speech from inside. [1] This is separate from his RF powered Thing bug that was installed in the US Embassy in Moscow. [2]

Similar techniques have been shown using lasers vibrometers to achieve a similar effect.

Both of these are perhaps not visual in the same way as this method in the article. But, do illustrate the long history of non-traditional microphone eavesdropping techniques.

Perhaps this is naive, but also as someone who grew up in the bay (south bay specifically) it feels like after the crash of 2001, and the resurgence of tech after that, the culture took on a markedly different tone. I guess perhaps in the transition from silicon dominance to web dominance something felt like it was lost in the valley.
