Yeah, I don’t know. I’ve been a part of companies where CEOs used this guy’s anecdotal bullshit to push/justify their own agendas. Some even met him and boasted about it like it’s a badge of honor.

This is why I don’t get the recent pg hate that’s been happening on HN. He’s always done this, but now people are saying he’s out of touch because he’s rich/white/old. Majority of things he’s blogged are no-nonsense observations.

Russia has now become a fascist state, bent on neo-colonial conquest of everything post-Soviet and post-Russian Empire. Russian population, in substantial numbers, supports this fascism and this neo-colonialism.

I thought 1) Most Russians were against the war (“special operation”), and 2) that Russia is losing this war badly and with the new rocket equipment supplied to Ukraine that they’ll be pushed back, etc.

So which is it?

This reads like deep depression.

Comments like these should result in at the very least a suspension, if not an outright ban. You’re calling for someone’s death quite liberally. Take a break from HN for your own sake.

Sigh, why does HN keep picking these editorialized articles up? I honestly expect the community to flag this as clickbait.

We have new evidence that invalidates our previous hypotheses, so we adjust course and keep going. “We all” didn’t believe a “myth about depression.” We believed that scientific findings combined with some relevant studies, experiments and feedback loops would yield a step in the right direction. We accept that the scientific method isn’t infallible.

I don’t understand what people are after. The further along we get in our exploration the more hypotheses we’ll invalidate. Which is to be expected. I would rather be outraged at ignorance than outraged at new knowledge that contradicts the old.

Correct. We do not all share this planet. You’re lucky the plutocrats haven’t put you against the wall and shot you but they simply don’t think you’re worth the effort to dispose of. The moment that effort is decreased enough such that your presence and being is more burden than worthwhile, you will be put out of your misery.

If you truly believe that you should have a right, you’ll have to fight for it. Posting on HN calling for a ban isn’t going to cut it. You’ll have to put an end to it and enforce it. Just like they do when they want something.

So what's going on here? Magic? Graham Hancock thinks a lost civilization of advanced humans visited the peoples of different continents and shared techniques like agriculture with them. Now, I like science fiction, but I think there's a better and simpler explanation for the agricultural multiple as well as all the other examples of simultaneous invention that have puzzled scholars over the decades.

Not to detract from the rest of the article but this is probably the least derisive, fair summary of GH’s work I have come across anywhere close to on a “mainstream” tech news site. Hell must be freezing over if people aren’t calling him a charlatan without actually bothering to read his work and listen to him, first hand, articulate his rationale.

To add, I started treating most information outlets, including HN, as endless faucets of propaganda, misinformation AND misdirection. The outrage is, at best, a farcical play of human dramas unfolding on a stage. To take any of this seriously is borderline pathological.

One would think he would also avoid the great majority of books out there too, as they’re just as trashy and toxic as news are.

All evidence I have seen is that the youth are more prepared than ever to navigate these matters with or without lots of close proximity.

Can’t say I agree with this. I’ve seen too many cases that lead me to believe we are closer to a society-scale neurosis given the scared shitless attitudes displayed by the younger generation over the past 2 years.

Whenever someone tries to pull a little clever power trip and politely silence you or tell you how you should behave and that your language is inappropriate, you owe it to yourself to tell them to fuck off (right after you call their behaviour “gay”, of course.)

It’s a very strange emotional appeal. Yes, you can ban first-hand imports of Russian culture, or any other nation. But what about all the ways in which your culture has already been affected by decades and decades of integrating these works because they stand on their own, aesthetically speaking, regardless of their origin?

I’m reminded of an equally strange move, in an equally strange vein: “Freedom Fries.”

The big three here in Canada grouped up against Verizon. It’s a cartel and they pay everyone off to look the other way.

I suspect a lot of people are ok and happy in fact with things being “broken” in their favour.

In my social circle it was women that were the most vocal on both sides of the issue. The men were mostly quiet and going along with whatever the wife or whoever wanted.

Biology is way more complicated and we know less about the mechanics of our own bodies than the computers we designed.

We don’t know much about that either, to be fair.

Probably because the only thing that can physically stop a man is another man, and when men get so unhinged as to support ruthless leaders to get what they want, all bets are off and you’re dealing with a carnage waiting to happen.

Given the misinformation that western media fell for, it certainly is cringe and bluepilled. It’s like people believe the narrative they want to see and ignore reality.

RE: “overkill” - I agree, but this blog post/article prompted me to suggest this as a one step solution to eliminate multiple steps with multiple products as an alternative to what another commenter called “OCD.” A bottle of methanol, and tissue lens. Yes, you can’t find it everywhere, but you can buy it in bulk from a local lab supply store. If you’re cleaning constantly, keep it in a small dark glass bottle dropper that you can take with you.

Any reason you can’t use pure methanol to clean glasses? I don’t wear glasses so I don’t know the specifics, but that’s what we use to clean industrial laser lenses and any tiny speck or smudge or oil would immediately burn the protective coating. We also don’t touch the lens tissue when we clean it, rather we put methanol on the lens tissue and slide it across. Curved lenses are a bit more interesting but same method of cleaning.

This is why I’m wary whenever I see “top X% in the income bracket.” I think it’s misdirection, because if you can’t afford something, then you can’t afford it, regardless of how well off the statistics say you are. You can save for a down payment, and then interest rates and mortgage will obliterate you. So really, the scale for these things in terms of affordability starts somewhere beyond what you’re making - and most of the upper 20% I bet, and then extends onwards to the actual ruling/owner class.

So the metric we should use isn’t this. It’s something else.

I won’t speculate with the usual HN nonsense of armchair economists. I will say I remember Michael O’Church’s two ladder theory and I agree with it based on personal observations.

He’s rich enough to drag this through the court for long enough to bankrupt Twitter, though.
