Google's version of freemium?

I'd love to know the numbers behind this. Anyone have an idea of what Google's Adword visitor LTV is for these sites?

I flew from Australia in 2011 for it and have no regrets. At the time though I was very new to the startup scene.

Like any conference most of the value is derived from the networking rather than the speakers/presentations. Keeping in mind the target market, expect to see a lot of undergrads and startup newbies.

That being said the talks are still amazing and there are some more senior guys that go.

I'd be interested to see what value this adds compared to the documentation and existing (free) blog posts on it's use. IMHO Backbone's docs are super friendly and if you're really wondering what's going on under the covers the source code is relatively easy to jump into and understand (assuming you're a javascript programmer not a jQuery hacker)

Completely agree - when it comes to software you will avoid doing 'stupid stuff' if you actually UNDERSTAND what you are doing.

I think this is a very good point. You may find that there is more to be made selling songs/albums/playlists via affiliate channels, or like stated, offering pro features. DJ's may even be using it to trial new vinyls before they buy. If nothing else understanding the use should allow you to better tailor the site to drive up traffic if you do decide to roll out ads.

Im just looking at flights now and should be able to have 8 days in town: 13th - 21st. Do you know any events off the top of your head that are on? Something I might start concentrating on once flights are booked.

I am definitely starting to think that it would be worthwhile, mainly for the networking. There are so many talented people in the area and the thought of meeting some of them really excites me.

Now I just hope they'll give me time off work. Somewhat short notice but I think (hope) it'll be okay!

Clever - quirky enough to get to the top of HN, informing (arguably) the best pool of potential employees that they're hiring.

As an alternative - I work site based requiring me on site 15 days at a time, 6 days off. Accommodation and food provided. As a salaried employee I am given a 40% uplift for this. I have heard of cases where this can be as great as 60%. However, the detail is in the numbers - when on site you are usually required to work 12hr days. 50% more hours, 40% more pay. Go figure.

What was your motivation for getting it done right from the start, rather than bootstrapping it yourself first for proof of concept/profitability? time constraints?

Obviously you have made some assumptions as to how long profitability will take - something I presume only comes with experience.

Not to over step my mark, but what magnitude of savings is needed to fund this sort of development? I ask this as I have recently started work on my own project, and am curious if my savings are even ballpark to consider outsourcing it.

I am not sure if it is possible (as my programming experience is very limited) but an API for this so, rather than continually having to provide support for other services, you outsource the development to the community!

This is true - it requires you have a product that is not intrinsically linked to the country you're developing it in. I would imagine something like Groupon.com or foursquare may be hard to get going in NZ. Where in NZ are you thinking of moving? Like squidsoup said, there seems to be quite the community in Wellington.
