And we know from other research, that people who fail in introductory programming classes, fail on that point exactly - they have problems with working with programs that manipulate variables without some meaning.
Add to that that in many fields of study women choose, there's relatively a lot of human interactions, and the goals are towards helping humans,one would see why CS doesn't have the biggest appeal for females ,and why the story of other professions evolved differently.
And that might guide us to some changes in CS curriculum - like maybe teaching in a more concrete way. But one wonders , isn't good CS mostly about abstraction ?

Have you tried something like f.lux ? it can remove the black spectrum of colors from computer/tablet displays ,and they claims there's research that this is the spectrum most critical for messing up with sleep.
With regards to eink web-apps, don't forget you'll also have to fight the keyboard if you'll even get one. So it's hard to design to that medium. On that note, there's the onyx eink phones/tablets that have a version of the play store, but their only unique apps are rss reader and google calender. But maybe sniffing around onyx and their users will let you discover usable apps.
Maybe with UberPool(sharing rides with other people on the same route) they'll have more access ? and if you combine that with Uber's SUV service, which enables sharing rides between up to 6 people, you'll get to something more accessible to poor people.
What's the big difference from downloading a cross-platform app using torrents ?
I'm not sure it would take the long term to determine reliability: there are engineers who specialize in that,and there are software tools to simulate the reliability of a mechanical systems.
Whether this company did this or not is unknown, if they are offering this system on a per month basis, it makes sense they did some reasonable level of analysis of costs, because it would reduce their risk greatly.
Of course those are factors , but qbotix has raised investment, has managed to get some commitments for solar projects, and there's even a company using their system in the UK offering to finance projects on a long term electricity purchase basis, claiming it's much cheaper than current providers:

So qbotix might have good solutions for the issues you mention. And that is of course without having concentrated solar power, which makes a qbotix a more attractive offer.
Yes, it's not very nice to collude. On the other hand, were programmers get very good salaries. To some, maybe even Sergey, it might not seem like an urjent and critical moral issue,in the way that saving lives is.
As a practical matter, especially for the robot ,it might not matter who is observing. The fact that one can observe oneself enables further capabilities like better feedback.
And by the way i think this observing robot has(or can have) an internal definition of self, and an observer beyond the self. It seems possible.
I think good understanding of conciousness comes from the meditative tradition, and their definition for it is "the part of the brain that observes the other parts".

Watson understands natural language(to some extent).That's a general capability, not a specific task.

On the other hand, Amazon is Google's biggest threat in general product search(and probably discovery). So surely Amazon is even stronger in books.

Another sensational title. We have many "virological penicilins". We call them anti-retrovirals. We even got some for influenza(Oseltamivir ). The only difference is that this is "natural" ,which appears to matter to some people.
But it's a good discovery, another drug is always useful.
They forget that Google also own a high resolution satellite company and they're working on a drone project - all which could be very useful for real time mapping.

And the incentives for self driving cars are huge , even as regional taxi companies, so connecting the traffic lights into the net(read only) as backup doesn't seem like a big problem.
The real interesting question is: does it really need "generalized intelligence" , or all the examples the article mentioned could be coded decently enough on a case by case basis, to a point where self driving car is much safer than a car ? I think they're betting on software and mostly on "cognitive computing" and watson. And they're focusing on that, leaving aside businesses that won't really give them a competitive advantage, like their fab.

Second there's a debate whether SOI is more expensive once it reaches volume. The claim vary between 10% more expensive , to cheaper , to something in the middle. We'll see.
IBM had a unique process call silicon-on-insulator that gives you something like an extra step in moore's law with regards to power and speed(but not cost). They also had their EDRAM technology , which is much more efficient memory type for cache.
This enabled them to build a huge(100MB) and fast(3TB/sec) L3 cache in their processors. This is something that could give a huge boost for many kinds of applications, for example databases d\and machine learning.
While intel has some edram capability, i haven't seem them release an integrated edram with the processor, not sure why.
And let's not forget, IBM now licenses the design for it's beast of a processor, the power8 ,in a modular format, enabling chip companies to easily add accelerators and innovate.
So it would be very interesting what intel's competitors will build with all those capabilities. I'm getting the popcorn.

But they aren't commonly used. It's probably because of medical conservatism coupled with business and status reasons.
And in some cases it does help to have the medical interview with a person. But wouldn't a cheaper nurse armed with a great software tool, offering a 20/30 minutes appointment is better than 7/10 minutes of a doctor's time? In some places in the british system that's what happens and research says the results are comparable to a doctor , with patients being happier.
2. There are crowd sourced solutions like you specify. The one i know is a ycombinator company called crowdmed.com . At least according to the media they do bring something very good to the table, but they're very new so it'll probably some mote time to see how they function and scale.
As an aside, there's an an expert system by a company called isabel healthcare, that in the hands of a regular family physician ,can enable regular physicians to diagnose rare and complex diseases at the level of top diagnosticians.It's available via cloud.I'm sure almost no physician of anybody in this thread will have it.
3. Not sure who is to blame, but i think many of those problems are common globally to some extent. Maybe the british system is somewhat better with the policy of employing lower level providers across many roles.
Basically, low status leads to a lot of stress.So unless the community as a whole is educated towards non-consumer ways , everybody is in a trap.
I have ever confidence that the TOR developers are trying to do something about it.
The basic architecture of TOR is limited theoretically with regards to some types of attacks it can handle.TOR developers probably cannot do anything about that.
And in some sense , supporting TOR is taking funding and attention from better anonimity technologies , that might be able to do the job , with enough development. That's another reason why the US government is investing in TOR.
Many businesses today have a relatively strong network effects of some sort.With that kind of business , growth is what's needed to achieve competitive advantage.

The problem with the Chinese goods is that it's very hard to locate high quality goods. The review systems are useless(full of junk) , and there's little reliable data about quality in english. So amazon becomes the default.

My opinion is that once you meet someone that really clicks, then it works out quickly and well.
Usually that feeling of "click" passes after 2 years and transforms into a mellower , longer lastin kind of love. So if you stay longer, you see how you both fit together under this new kind of love.

Sounds interesting. Do you mind sharing how did you trained your machine learning algorithm ? It seems like an awfully hard task, since in a sense you are competing with the Google algorithm and the order it offered you.
