If you don't know the truth, at least try not to lie. Nothing I've seen in the dozens of downtown live streams jives with the smearing I've witnessed on places like r/pics and the news. It appears from the commentary that there is such vitriol towards the protesters that I wouldn't put it past some opposition group to fly defamatory flags that have no apparent connection to why they are protesting. A prominent trusted newspaper even ran a cartoon presenting the trucks as fascist... for protesting against a perceived government overreach. What kind of cognitive dissonance is going on there?

Of course, voter ID opponents have let out the private partisan internal logic lots of times when they thought only people aligned with their faction were listening, so we don't need to speculate why the rules are inconsistent with the public logic.

When you show up to vote in a non-voter-id state, you only have to give your name. Any one could have shown up in my place and voted in my name, because no ID was allowed to be show. This was made more apparent when I reached for my wallet instinctively as I gave my name, and they gestured with hands out that "we don't check for ID".

I left my lucrative cybersecurity startup job to pursue full time independent research in AGI. Several months in and it's been great progress wise, and I have to live more frugally. Being on the cyber startup was like being on a cruise ship headed to some destination that was "just okay", all the while seeing an island off in the distance that we were slowly passing by, which is where I wanted to be. I jumped off the bow and started swimming towards the most meaningful goal I could hope to apply my skills toward. Will I advance the field of artificial consciousness? I hope to. There's so much I don't know, and even more no one really knows. COVID was a gift. Political and economic turmoil is a gift. I was already focusing on the goal of AGI, but the strife of the world gave me the will to leap for it.

I agree. My revenge as a user has been to scrape entire channels I want to watch, as I can only imagine things getting worse than they are now (less free, less intrusive, more thought-police). I now have a lifetime worth of non-perishable knowledge/wisdom stored up in video form, which compliments ebooks. It's like prepping but for data. Shot out to r/datahoarder.

I deleted my real account earlier this year, but if I want to get to the marketplace I use a fake account (I had set up several years ago for political research.) I then use FBPurity and some uBlock Origin code to remove all "ship to you" ads.

I was in the back room of Epic Megagames in 97 when Tim Sweeney showed me his automatic LOD on the Skaarj model. It was pretty basic compared to the current tech, but I think remember him saying it didn't require lower poly meshes/maps to be generated by the animators/artists. I don't know if the LOD was pre-baked or not at the time, but given that we were running the first MMX chips it probably was.

I've been loving Foam as it lives inside VSCode, where I spend most of my days anyway. Obsidian was nice too, but I ended up moving back to Foam. The only feature I wish Foam had is to apply force directed layouts to only selected nodes at a time.

Funny story, in my undergrad I worked at UMIACS and we had to install a set of foot pedal mice buttons in an office next to Minker's. The user would move the mouse on their desk, but click with their feet.

I used to feel this way, until I read the book The Structure of Scientific Revolutions by Thomas Kuhn. The author points out correctly that too often the arrival of our current state of scientific beliefs from the past is drawn out as a straight line, and that the history of what was 'scientific truth' for a time was altogether forgotten or not taught. The easiest(), most respectful and accurate solution is to always couch a belief from the context and ontology of where it came from, including religious, scientific and personal beliefs.

As I become more learned with age, I find no greater delight than being humbled by how little we can actually claim to know. In my opinion this humility should be used for our advantage: by the small burden of contextualizing the origins and boundaries of a [scientific] belief, I think we prime ourselves for accelerating cross domain scientific revolutions. Referencing the origins of belief systems is a practice we can employ to benefit future understanding.

I'd argue the same is true for someone who studies multiple religions and their various interpretations. How would they arrive at any greater understanding without having references to the origins of groups of belief?

We're not going to ban you from a sport, take your prize money and fire those associated with you, if you wore a "Bush did 9-11" t-shirt and shouted 7 words about how the US was wrong to invade Iraq. My children were very amused over dinner when I had to explain why a certain cartoon bear is banned in a country, and how some countries can mock their leaders with almost anything short of inciting violence. While it was within Blizzard's terms and conditions to ban the player, it was still the wrong decision and it illuminated who is in control.
