Hmm I spent a good amount of time in big tech, now work in AI, and I minored in philosophy at Berkeley back in the day (Parmenides, Socrates, Plato etc.)

How do I align myself with such a job?

Sakana Fugu 1 month ago

I love when they put a black box in front of the other black boxes so I can get a questionably better black box for slower service and more money!

Entirely misses the point.

You're not contributing $4 to help them host.

You're contributing $4 because you liked their ideas and are contributing to fund more.

The author writes:

Look, I also think that creatives should get compensation in the same way as everyone else, but that doesnt mean that every instance of creativity should be a venue for profit. I think it's shameful that programmers get such higher compensation compared to artists, but this is not the place to equalize it.

Then proceeds to offer no mechanism of such compensation for blog writers.

Many people put in a not insignificant amount of time into their writing, and if it was worth our time to read, maybe we should consider showing our appreciation in a material way.

temporary workaround

I've heard this one before

(Maybe it'll be the first time that a temporary workaround stays around longer than expected then)

Numeral | Software Engineer (full-stack, AI team) | Hybrid (NYC) | $175k - $300k

We build sales tax compliance software so companies can focus on their product instead of taxes. We’re one of the fastest-growing players in the space, taking share from incumbents like Avalara.

We’re a small, high-ownership team. My team in particular is applying AI (agents + workflows) to automate and dramatically reduce operational overhead.

What you’ll do:

- Build product + AI infra across the stack

- Work on AI-driven systems (agents, orchestration, internal tooling)

- Ship quickly with real user impact, both internally and externally

If interested, can send resume directly to jerry@numeralhq.com and I'll fast track!

Cheers,

Jerry (Engineering Manager)

I don't really understand how this differentiates against the competition.

Independence

Any "agent" running against code review instead of code generation is "independent"?

Autonomy

Most other code review tools can also be automated and integrated.

Loops

You can also ping other code review tools for more reviews...

I feel like this article actually works against you by presenting the problem and inadequately solving them.

(In)famously, Google's motto used to be "Don't be evil"

Scary to think about, if moving away from "Don't be evil" is the precedent for an "AGI company"

Take One Small Step 7 months ago

I recommend The Now Habit if you found this line of thinking to be useful. It provides frameworks to understand why you have such mental blocks and more concrete strategies to try.

Doesn't seem to work very well, i have to coerce it to create memories and even then it's losing track of them or failing to create memories altogether. I want a single thread I can talk about multiple different social interactions in my life but it fails to keep track even of a single storyline, and fails entirely to save anything from the second storyline.

Six Big Bets 7 months ago

At 51 you don't have the energy and time to compete on "grinding" which is often the "advantage" in the early days of a startup before a moat has solidified

Six Big Bets 7 months ago

I should've been more clear, I feel like at 51 a better leverage of impact is no longer the startup but writing (essays, blogs, books) or other forms of influence (e.g. teaching)

I appreciate the feedback on the writing!

I think it's a cool perspective, but the not-so-hidden assumption is that for any given domain, the efficiency asymptote peaks well above the alternative.

And that really is the entire question at this point: Which domains will AI win in by a sufficient margin to be worth it?
