You can't sell an idea. Prove you can build it. Then prove that what you built is worth something by getting people to use it.

Where are you? Any co-working spaces near you? We're spoiled here in the SF Bay Area.

Keep studying. Get coding. Do side projects. Do as much as you can. Study up on typical basics that interviews normally ask... data structures, algorithms, etc. You're smart and passionate - I don't know about your area but here in the SF Bay Area I don't think it'd be too hard to find something.

Start with the Stanford course. It's the best free resource out there. Find a local meetup. Go to a couple hackathons.

A portfolio is a quick way for someone who doesn't know you to get an idea of what you're capable of. Try and get a gig through people that know you, they won't need you to prove as much. What type of gig are you looking for? What are your skills? What skills are you trying to improve?

13" is just too small for me. I'm on a 15" MBP and love it. Yeah, would love it more if it was lighter.
