Do YC partners find stories such as "I grew up poor and in low income housing. My parents didn't graduate from high-school. By all measures I shouldn't have made it to a university nor should I have succeeded. But I paid my way through college and graduated with a high GPA in Computer Science" impressive?

I ask because it is my story albeit it is neither technology nor entrepreneurship related.

I originally studied computer science but always had an interest in computer programming. Eventually I stumbled on these notes. They gave me the confidence to switch from mechanical engineering to computer science.

I downloaded the beta app. I enjoyed the swiping gesture for organizing my email. I found it faster than using a mouse.

Andrew and his team worked out of our office space for a few weeks while they built their product.

Andrew's is a stand-up guy and he's recruited a solid team of software developers to take on this project.

C#, C++ and Java are very common and low risk skills to learn. There is also a demand for mobile application development and front end development with Html and JavaScript. The Ruby on Rails frame work is common especially at newer tech companies.

This c++ is very different from the c++ I remember. I'd like to learn more about modern c++ style and idioms. Can anyone recommend a good text?

I've spent regular time preparing for programming puzzle style interviews by working through several books. For whiteboard style interviews I've received puzzles that I've studied before or puzzles that are similar to something I've seen before. I feel that how well I do in this style interview is proportional to how many practice puzzles I've done.

But often the work I'd be doing has very little to do with the preparation I did for the interview. For this type of work I've found that a programing project is a much more honest assessment of my skills. And this is good for both the employer and I.

I've heard something similar that sums up this way:

       "The more you're heard, the less you're listened to"

This graphic doesn't make living in the valley very appealing, at least financially and especially for those with a family.

I did notice that the graphic doesn't mention any difference in company culture or the quality of the engineers in the Valley. I plan to move my family from Texas to the Valley soon.

According to the graphic this move doesn't really make financial sense but can anyone speak to the engineering culture in the Valley and the advantages it has over other areas?

This is one of those ideas that could help support a small startup of two guys living on air mattresses. But doesn't this run into some kind of copyright issue?

As an application developer this story makes me wish I had taken a few industrial design courses back in college.

I'd like to believe that this would be a great protest gesture for the increasingly strained middle and working classes. It would garner a great deal of attention and the narrative is powerful: It is easier to receive medical attention as a prisoner than as a honest hard working blue-collar/service industry worker.

I am unsure of how your healthcare system works. Is it possible to pay for more timely service from a private hospital or private doctor?

If it is possible but not feasible because of cost, then an American, speaking practically, experiences the same thing. Not enough money to pay for medical service. However there is an important difference.

An American must pay something out of pocket. The financial burden may lead to bankruptcy and ultimately no medical care at all. I've noticed that you did not raise concerns about bankruptcy but instead your concern was over slow medical service.

Is it possible that US doesn't have as great of a manufacturing indusrty as China, thus in a war between the US and China, the US would be at a disadvantage in the long term in terms of the sheer number of aircraft, tanks and war ships produced? Similar to the Japaneese during WWII.

I wonder if simply reading HackerNews skews our view on what languages and frameworks are used at startups.
