Started programming at 9yo on a PDP11/70 in 1979 and just kept coding ever since.

Along the way, got to write code for some extremely cool platforms, including some Crays and Thinking Machines CM-2.

Nowadays, work is C/C++/Java/Javascript Enterprise software stack as a Sr Principle Software Eng for a major co.

Yes. On Apple Silicon Macs (w/ macOS Sonoma or later), native fullscreen automatically triggers Game Mode. This feature slashes input lag by prioritizing CPU/GPU resources and doubling the Bluetooth polling rate to 240 Hz for wireless accessories. Gaming works very well in this mode, even with PC titles played thru crossover.

Conversely, using borderless windowed mode instead of native fullscreen on macOS adds rendering latency due to the Desktop Window Manager (DWM) compositor. The latter is 'doing it wrong' and has the lag people don't like.

I have this problem a few times a day on my corporate M4 Pro when I lock the screen... with 60Hz set. It happens when the two security monitoring app corporate insists on are scanning harder b/c the screensaver kicked in. My personal macbook pro is fine.

MacBook Neo 5 months ago

Uptime of 13 days. My WindowServer is at 441Mb. ??? (32Gb RAM M2Max MBPro)

Have had iPhones since the 5s. On a 17pro now. Never had this happen as an apple software thing, but the new ones (I last had a 14 and didn't have this problem, not sure when the button placement changed) make it easier to accidentally place the user's thumb on the volume buttons (up -or- down) and end up cranking it or silencing it unintentionally.

My gosh. I'm having to support some older platforms (like OS/400) who STILL don't have C++11 support. And also for now, HP-UX and Solaris, which support up to C++14 (dead platforms - hoping to drop soon). Someday maybe I'll get to move on.

I also really like it, I have a bottle in the pantry.

The first time I had it (in Chicago of course), I asked the bartender what it tasted like before trying it as my friends had been building up how bad it was. She said, “It tastes like the day my Father left us.”

I have friends who make custom shirts with the Malört logo and the text “Malört: because fuck you.”

Blame? Simply saying downloading 2gb isn’t the power consumption hit you seem to think it is.

Not much of a gamer anyway, just an observation when I tried a couple apparently dodgy games.

Not sure why your reply wasn’t related to your original comment. Felt rather knee-jerk reactionary to me instead. Oh well.

Downloading 2gb of anything on my iPhone via wifi from my in-home gigabit fiber barely puts a dent in my battery life let alone much time.

The random ads in most phone games are much worse on my battery life.

You are right, I am lucky to work in a healthy work environment which doesn’t have those issues, and that is out of my control.

I have no illusions that the company at the macro level doesn’t value the individual specifically and my divsion’s mgmt could be forced into getting rid of people on a whim (ie not enough revenue per headcount, we changed the deal), despite them being genuine amazing humans as managers (a very rare thing)

As a grey beard programmer who started programming at 9yo in the late 1970s, I have never had to work 60 hr weeks - except for a two week period where I chose to rescue a project that had been mishandled. Only one project had code thrown out and I agreed with it as it really wasn’t our core business and even though it worked it wasn’t a good fit.

The large majority of my career (26.5 yrs now of 35.5 yrs earning) has been as a very senior engineer with multiple patents at a very large formerly SV HQ company.

I never have seen age discrimination - in fact have productive colleges who are nearing 70 (I personally am a long way from even normal us retirement age still) both male and female and still learning and writing great code.

I just thought my anecdote could counter your more dour analysis- although despite that I agree with the heart of your message…

You have to love it to do it for a lifetime.

Also, AI is mostly Artificial and not so intelligent. I do not fear for your generation once management realizes that it isn’t all that.

1.6 metric tonnes to get the SUV or AWD extra charge…

My Mini Clubman S All4 barely makes it under at 1.56 tonnes. Once I fill the tank with gas, It’s only 7lbs under.

My wife’s 2023 V4 Camry XSE AWD is 1.62 metric tons and would by penalized by this weight class distinction simply because of the AWD feature. Note the V6 Camry TRD is 1.62 metric tonnes as well (5lbs lighter than the XSE) but with its V6 sport tuning will have much worse emissions - while not being penalized because it isn’t AWD.

(Note non-AWD cars aren’t penalized by this law…)

Unless there are other distinctions in this law, this seems like a weird way to define the penalized class.

Meanwhile, a BMW 840 Grand Coupe rear wheel drive is unaffected and weighs 1.93 metric tons.
