Totally agree. And who cares, the internet, computers and web apps worked before and will work after those go away. It's not like React is some irreplaceable genius invention, it's just a framework like Ember, Angular, etc etc. The people who made them are no doubt amazing, but what I'm saying is we're not "in debt" to Meta for these tools at all.

I love how people in this thread are ABSOLUTELY BAFFLED at "how do we do this a better way." How about the same way doctors, lawyers, and literally everyone else does it? Look at credentials, schooling, past experience, references and personality interviews rather than 99% leetcode? I have lawyer, doctor, etc friends (aka high up professionals who get paid what we do or more) and they think it's absolute insanity what SOFTWARE engineers have to do to get a freaking job. They think it's asinine, quite frankly and all go "well what did you even go to school for? Don't they know you worked at a Fortune 500 company for over a decade? Why are they having you do trick questions from CS101 courses?"

Y'all, it's not that difficult. You can just pretend we're like everyone else because gasp our profession simply isn't that special like we all think it is for some stupid reason.

not really a big deal for them considering they have the big bucks to buy a nice home 5 min from the office, or you know, pay for a car service to drive them.

This, and most of the recession was manufactured to take worker power away that was gained during WFH/pandemic times. It's not a coincidence that the FAANG companies were fined a combined 45M (chump change to them) when caught colluding to stagnant tech worker wages. I almost guarantee they colluded in layoffs/getting people to RTO.

I made and operate a small app called [FishHarmony](https://www.fishharmony.com/). It's a simple app for iPhone that tells you what fish species (fresh or salt, I offer both) are compatible with fish of different species! So if you want to see if Tetras get along with Rasboras, for example, you can check my app/website! I've done no marketing and get something ~200 active users per month and 1K+ downloads lifetime. Not much, but still cool that people are using it!

I pay about 7/month for a Heroku instance and the stupid $99 a year for the App Store. Working on some freemium apps that will hopefully offset those costs.

+1 here, and yeah it's definitely not just white men. Where I work, it's ALL Indian or Asian, you'd be hard pressed to even find white people where I work that are actually in engineering.

I really disagree here; I've been a successful engineer at a Fortune 500 company for a decade. I'm a front end engineer. I still have absolutely no idea why companies choose to test FE engineers with leetcode style questions (which I am terrible at). My job has almost NOTHING to do with leetcode, and yet it's a huge hurdle to go over for some unknown reason.

I'm a great engineer, I just suck at leetcode questions because...shocker! They have absolutely nothing to do with my day-to-day. It's similar to puzzles; I hate puzzles and doing puzzles/escape rooms/etc, but I'm a pretty smart guy.

Leetcode is merely a gatekeeping methodology that proves almost nothing and weeds out a lot of amazing engineers who aren't skilled at grinding leetcode or hate brain teaser shit.

I honestly think you severely underestimate the amount of people not taking it due to being conspiracy nuts.

I never thought I'd know ANYONE like this, but now almost every antivaxxer I know has some crackpot insanity reason for not getting vaccinated. None of them are worried about safety, FDA approval, etc. Hell my FIL thinks COVID-19 was meant to bring the endtimes so Jesus will come back and the rapture will happen. So do ALL of his constituents of his Church more or less.

So let's not mitigate the crackpots to a "minority" because it's simply not true.

I promise you that the amount of JS devs who LIKE Rust is not very high. I cannot imagine going from a language like JS or TS to the confusing syntactical monster that is Rust.

I realize this is an unpopular opinion, but JS/TS is WAY more human readable than Rust is. It's almost the equivalent of programming in C for the browser. Plus, literally anything you could ever want to use in already in the JS ecosystem and doesn't have to be reinvented in Rust.

LOL This looks exactly like the animation from the old LucasArts game "Full Throttle." Amazing!
