It's full of bugs and the UI isn't great, but it was my first Elm and Rust project.
If the numbers in the meters (current workload, amount of stress and chance of emailing back) are percentages and the colours are representative of the percentage, then the 13% chance of being emailed back should be coloured red and not green to indicate the low chance of being emailed back.
It would be nice if the mouse was tilted slightly so that your wrist is not parallel to the desk. For the scroll wheel, you could put that under the thumb, i.e. on the side.
When I lived in Leeds I used to attend the Open Coffee meetings (monthly) and the BarCamps (annually), where people would talk about start-ups and start-up events, so you could target these meetings (if they are still going). I doubt you could target students directly without appearing to be spammers.
You (perhaps collectively with other roundabouters) could try holding some sort of competition for students. I am sure academics at universities would help to promote something like that to their students and you would be able to see which students are capable of building things and getting things done, i.e. which are potential hires. It could also expose students to the types of work, and the style of working, that occurs at a start-up.

That's good to know. I thought I had found some real bargains in Manhattan but then realized the apartments were not in Manhattan, e.g. the address on Craigslist would simply be '34th St.' and PadMapper would plot it in Manhattan, but it is was actually 34th St. in Astoria.
It would also be good if PadMapper could scrape addresses from the title of posts (or from within the post) when there is no (full) address link at the bottom of a Craigslist post. This might be a bit more tricky since the way some of the addresses are written can't even be interpreted by Google Maps.
I still found PadMapper to be the best way to find apartments in areas I wanted to live, and it is a lot clearer than HotPads and Google Property search. One thing that I would really love is a more complete map that shows transportation and amenities like Google Maps. I often found myself having to re-search the address on Google Maps to find out what was in the neighbourhood.
My experiences are still fresh in my mind, so feel free to contact me if you want some more feedback.
PadMapper is a very useful tool. I used it when I moved to NY. It filters results well, but the only problem I had was that it didn't always have the correct location. I assume it scrapes the link to the Google Map from Craigslist, so the inaccuracy might be from the advertiser who doesn't put in the correct geo-location.
A couple of things with their video:
1) The keyboard (layout) was not invented for the computer, but for the typewriter;
2) Their whole premise seems to be based on 'gestures that mimic handwriting', well why don't they just have gestures that are like handwritten characters?

I did notice one thing/error: Some of the titles for the stories don't show up correctly and are just the URL to the story. Sometimes you can tell what the story is from the URL but this is not always the case, especially for HN URLs.
Very true. In the life sciences it was 'biotechnology' in 2000, 'nano-technology' in 2005, and now it is 'synthetic biology'; but they're all the same and have changed names to get the funding.
I am not too skinny; that is just others peoples opinion. I am of normal weight for my height and age, and I feel great. It seems worse than it is because I went from 12 stone to 10 after I stopped weight training. Also, I am Indian, so everyone thinks that being over weight is healthy and a sign of wealth. They just don't learn from all the heart attacks and diabetes.
I think I eat very well. I believe in getting the best, freshest food I can, having a well balanced diet (which includes fats) and in the traceability of food. I do have a gluten and cow's milk intolerance, so I guess I don't eat that much, if any, refined carbs; however, I do eat other flours and other sources of dairy. If you're eating well, feeling good and are 'skinny', I think you should be okay. If you're worried then you should probably go and see a doctor or nutritionist.
I am not sure if it's 100% true or not. I was told to do this by a nutritionist because I was drinking a pint at a time. I would drink this all in one go, but I imagine sipping would be fine. But drinking later ensures that I don't feel uncomfortably full.
But surely a large, sudden, water intake will dilute the stomach (not intestine where most of the nutrients are absorbed) juices and pH?
Hmmm, where to start:
- Switch out junk food for healthier snacks (dark chocolate, nuts, (dried) fruit). Over time your tolerance for junk food will go down and you will want less of it;
- If you really want a hit of junk food, just have it. There is no point dwelling on it. I will have one piece of sugary food with my coffee at around 10:00, which keeps me satisfied. Sometimes I binge out after not having a lot for so long (months), but when your tolerance for processed food goes down you will stop much sooner (through a mixture of guilt and physiological repulsion);
- If you want sugar, eat 'good' sugar, i.e. fruit;
- Have a bowl of healthy nibbles lying around to munch on when walking past. I always have grapes and nuts in the kitchen that I pick at;
- Always eat breakfast. I have mine as soon as wake-up;
- Cook your own meals and don't eat processed food;
- Drink water rather than carbonated drinks;
- Eat smaller meals more often. I try to eat something every three hours;
- Follow the Japanese (I think) philosophy of eating until only 80% full, not bursting at the seams. For me the ideal amount of food is a cereal bowl worth of food;
- Have a drink about 30 - 60 mins after you have eaten, not during a meal. This helps to top-up the fullness feeling and also allows food to be digested more efficiently before the digestive enzymes get diluted by a drink;
- Don't try and justify eating rubbish by doing exercise. You are what you eat.
The end result is that people always tell me I am too skinny even though I eat a lot. I don't need to do that much exercise because my diet is good. When I do go out for dinner and/or drinks I can indulge without guilt.

This is typical of those with the power in science: they are too slow to embrace new technologies and to adapt to what researchers need. But, hey, why do they need to when they have researchers bent over a barrel whilst they rake in the money.
Scientific publishing is ripe for disruption, which includes getting rid of pdf.
I would agree with you but recently I have really started to like the TechStars program. Why? Because of the impression given to me from their recent videos about the start-ups and the program that have appeared this time. The videos show how the program works, the openness, the mentoring, the city (Boulder not Boston), the community/spirit there, what the founders are like. When TechStars first started, I was thinking 'they have no chance, YC is the only place to be'; but now, I really respect what they have going on there, and wouldn't mind going there.
YC seems a bit more closed. Outsiders can't gage what it is really like except from a few vids here and there and the comments on HackerNews. Plus, with the increased popularity of HackerNews, it is quite difficult to track the comments from YC company founders. Of course, when someone gets in then they probably don't care any more, but it's always nice to be open and show people what you're all about. The same goes for all the other programs.
The point: if you're starting a new program, especially in a traditionally non-tech area, it is best to be open and show what the program (including location) is all about. It's just good marketing.

I think there is a need and place for it.
One of the things I am hoping to do with my start-up is to build simple tools to help wet-lab scientists access informatics solutions to analyse and visualise their data, and simple tools for informatics scientists to visualise their data so that a wet-lab scientist can understand it (more easily). There is a huge communication gap between (bio)wet-lab and (bio)informaticians, and I think 'data science' tools can help to bridge that gap.
Looks like an interesting course. And you couldn't be in a better place for it. My second choice of course was a masters in information science, which looks very similar to the vlis one.
I think data science is a very broad subject area that covers the science of organising information (information science and vlis), right through to information visualisation.
Information science would have given me a good grounding in the skills I need for my start-up (which is involved in organising research information), but I thought it would be best to build on my expertise and interests (design, HCI, UX, psychology) and team up with someone who knows a lot more about the technical side of building information systems - more than I could ever learn from a one year masters.
It sounds like we are starting at opposite ends of the data/information science spectrum; it will be interesting to see if we meet in the middle after our masters.
I have decided to do a masters degree in computational biology (bioinformatics).
There are a few masters courses that could lead you to a career in data science, but it depends on your background. Most of the courses I found were specialisations, e.g. a masters in computer vision or HCI for those with a computer science background, or a masters in digital media or design and technology for those with an arts background. I had neither, so I thought I might have to do a conversion course into computer science or art and then specialise. However, when I read the article above, I realised I was more on the design side anyway (happier in Photoshop and Illustrator than a text editor) and that I needed to learn the computing and statistics side. This brought me to bioinformatics since I already have a background in biochemistry. The course will teach me programming, data mining and statistics. I also get to do three projects, which I am going to do in visualisation of life science data - which is why I got interested in this topic in the first place.
I think undergraduates have a greater opportunity to 'cobble' a course together tailored towards data science.
I found it useful to do a bit of research on anyone who does a visualisation that you like and see what their background is.
Don't forget the graphic design and HCI parts, and definitely do not underestimate them. I often find that people with a scientific/technical background find it hard to visualise and present data well because of their background - 'I love lots of information and data; therefore, everyone else must love lots of information and data'. Wrong. You can number crunch all day long, but if you can't translate the output into something that people can understand (i.e. turn information into knowledge) then there is no point.

The original article inspired me to go back to university so that I can become a data scientist. Can't wait.
