The third point is also quite critical. The biggest industry in Germany is car manufacturing. And because of this every change here might disrupt millions of people, potential voters, and harm the industry. The reason germany did not come up with a great Tesla competitor or even Tesla itself is because of that. Everything moves so slow in these companies, they depend on so many other companies to get you some part of your car and then in the end assemble it all, that any change will disrupt too much and gets killed before it can bud.

I am really looking forward for every Hacktoberfest. I try to look for issues, which i can fix with my knowledge. My problem often times is, that i do embedded software and finding an issue here is often times hardware dependend. So now i am looking for other things i might be able to fix. Of course i also want to get my 4th hacktoberfest t-shirt. But i really hate it that people start to spam repositories. Try to fix a real problem, not just changing a name.

i gotta say all this shittoberfest hype now really killed my mood and i hope that in the end the 70000 t-shirts will still be enough. Also i did not have the time to start hacking on the 1st october directly.

I think licensing is not the problem, why nobody installs emacs anymore. It is initial setup. Where can I get a good code highlighter for all my code. Integration into obscure ide's compilers like iar. A workflow showing me easily what I changed, which files to check into git. A nice git overview of file history thanks to extensions. where can I get all this easily. One click and have a dark theme. Also easily customizable shortcuts. Manpower behind the editor for many changes and improvements. I mean who pumps out new versions every month.

I would say vs code does all that and while using an easy to overcome entry bar. And I am much more productive even than in native ide's for embedded development. Like iar eclipse or Segger.

The only thing I would want to try is using the org mode in emacs for nice todo handling. But else I see no appeal in emacs. It is just ugly, more concerned about it's license instead of just saying, this is free software just contribute and we will improve by using everything we can.

The thing is the only real backup solution which worked for me was clonezilla. Offline backup of a complete drive. But it is too much work. Its offline, it takes time etc. But at least i have a known working state which i can restore onto and have everything. I would need a live clonezilla backup onto a network drive and a bootloader, which has functionality to restore that backup.

What i really miss on Linux, or for backups in general:

Make it super easy.

I just want to open the software and tell hey here is my network drive/external drive. Please start the backup of all my installed apps, all my configurations, all my music and develop files.

Also for restoring, just make it easy. Can somebody point me to a good solution? The problem is Linux is too diverse. Either you use basic tools like rsync which everybody can use, or you get super specific with automated btrfs backups onto a specific btrfs drive with deduplication and backup snapshots. Sounds super useful. But not easy as well. Also a gui would be nice, or at least a super in depth tutorial walking you through backing up your apps, your configs, your ssh keys. whatevs.

Now that i hear it, i have to admit, he sang through a telephone. Would really love to here an ai prediction version.

Can somebody help me figure this out. I want a VPS, 2 cores 2-4gb of ram in europe. How much would it cost per month? Also how much does storage cost? And if i were to say put a minecraft server there. How would it be able to dynamically ramp the machine up and down if needed? Only via the interface? or after trying to connect to a specific port? I am not the typical target audience for these kind of server deals. But i want my small cheap server for myself.

Am also an embedded dev. What toolchains do you use and how do you set them up using docker? Can you provide some sort of guide, because you already said. First investment is pretty high.

The problem i have with cubernetes is the following: I as a small developer and small server owner don't have the ressources to even get started. The first thing i see at cubernetes is a cluster. Why a cluster. Do i need to cluster my Raspberry pi's to get something out of it? Do i need to buy 3 servers just to run 5 containers?

In docker its easy. Download Docker. Start container. Install container manager like platformio. Done.

But true to the article. Docker seems very hostile towards the community and towards getting revenue. If i think about Kubernetes and Revenue i hear IBM, Red Hat. And i am too cheap of a person and too small of a customer to ever need those guys. So i will still keep using Docker.

And because i know more about Docker i will probably try to use it at work as well. Easy as that.

But i am open to suggestions.
