My Time at Lehman 13 years ago

When Michael Lewis wrote Liar's Poker he was shocked over the number of people who contacted him, asking for advice on how to get into investment banking.

Immediate compensation could be to allow "face value plus 5%" of the medallion to be used to pay any local/city taxes, with say 7 or 10 years given to use the credit.

The IRS rules http://www.irs.gov/publications/p535/ch08.html state you have to amortize/depreciate the license over 15 years (180 months). So, any licenses that are 16 or more years old, have already been written off in full, so, a lesser amount would be needed to compensate the owners.

Bureaucracy's main purpose is to create more bureaucracy.

As a side effect, they collect taxes or issue you your driver's license, it is just a means to the end of self-perpetuation.

Eliminating the income tax and going to a much more transparent method like higher fuel taxes (everyone pays them because everyone uses transportation) or some other broadly based consumption tax, would be excellent.

OpenVZ gives you a container as they call it, which looks like its very own Linux OS. You can login to it, install packages with the package manager, etc. All processes you run, e.g. Apache/PHP, plus MySQL , run in this VM. PHP and MySQL would communicate over a Unix local socket, same as on non-virtualized Linux OS.

Docker appears to run each process, in isolation. So you would have 2 isolated processes (Apache/PHP, plus MySQL) which can only talk to each other over a local network pipe (which should be quite fast with minimal overhead).

(this is my understanding).

I bought the deal when it was on sale for $49 and I remember it being faster than that, however.

"It was understood that since Jews represented a minority percentage of the overall population, the university would only accept that percentage into the student body. This was in line with the Soviet Union’s unofficial policy of anti-semitism in the post-Stalin era."

So, quotas... are there quotas, official or unofficial, in the USA university system?

You can write off leases as a business expense. You have to track depreciation and many other things, if you buy it outright. Leases go right into monthly expenses and reduce your taxes immediately.

Do remember that the current flu vaccine (as an example) has an efficacy rate of less than 65%. So even if 100% of the population were vaccinated, herd immunity would not be possible.

Herd immunity requires about 75% + efficacy of the vaccines (and assuming 100% of the target population is vaccinated), from what I can understand (it varies based on how the disease being vaccinated against, is spread).

There are vaccines being sold and marketed, that have efficacy rates as low as 35%.

However, given Britain's often lousy climate, the royals probably pay for themselves in the value of the additional tourism dollars generated alone.

If there was nobody living at Buckingham Palace, far fewer people would go see it.

I am simply gob-smacked that people who are communicating over the Internet (needs gold, even if you are using fiber for much of the way) via their computers or smartphones (needs gold) don't realize how much gold is used in modern tech. Admittedly, fractions of a gram, but times millions of items!

And gold has been used in jewelry, art, decoration as well as monetary purposes for 1000s of years.

I would expect at the least, American readers to be familiar with the "Continental currency" and its devaluation to 1% of it previous value: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Early_American_currency#Contine...

You are both right and wrong.

The total amount of support given to the banks was far greater than the total amount of ALL residential mortgages everywhere in the USA. Total support given in all the various ways was over $10 Trillion, while the total value of all residential mortgages is under $4 Trillion.

No, I DO in fact, want the statistics, if a writer is going to make the claim that:

"And they don’t die like the rest of us. What’s unusual about them is not how much treatment they get compared to most Americans, but how little."

It should be easy to prove/disprove this, as doctors get surveyed all the time on different subjects.

You've never seen one close down, because they do extensive research on vetting each location before they put one up; but also, they remove all identifying signage etc. within 24 hours of a location being closed, since they don't want to hurt their brand by implying failure.
