Sure you can host your PDS, but if you want to deploy your own instance like you would do with Mastodon, you need to deploy a Relay and an AppView as well. And the way the network works, you need beefy servers for that.

On ActivityPub and Nostr you develop all kind of applications already, it is not only Twitter clones, but also Instagram clones, Reddit clones, on Nostr there is even the resurrected Vine (https://about.divine.video/).

And it is not trivial to switch from the Bluesky did:plc (which you cannot run in write-mode on your own and need to use the official Bluesky owned) to did:web, which you can run on your own.

No such problem on Mastodon/ActivityPub.

Or join a European Mastodon server and solve the problem at the root.

That is not the point.

The point is that without talking with Bluesky, you cannot start your own ATProto product or you'll get throttled from the network.

Basically, because they didn't warn Bluesky that they were going live, they had their traffic heavily trottled and they were unable to function.

So long for decentralisation if you need to talk to the owner of the protocol you are trying to use...

But Bluesky does not solve these points:

- content not in line with the political left is censored

- sure, you have your data in your PDS, but it is de-facto useless if the central identity server of Bluesky goes down

- ActivityPub and Nostr solve this already without being owned by a company

- you cannot easily and cheaply have an ATProto instance. AP and Nostr solve this already

The nightmare of the Wsocial rollout is a testament of the massive control Bluesky has on the ATProto network.

If Wsocial was on ActivityPub or Nostr nothing similar would have happened.

ATProto has serious centralisation problems, baked into the design. And it makes sense, considering it came out of a Twitter R&D experiment to "decentralise" Twitter itself. Pure federation was never part of the initial design.

Google doesn't care they do not control iOS. Google cares to have their products everywhere. For many years Google apps were better on iOS than on Android, because on Android they just preinstall them while on iOS they need to be installed explicitly.

Android is not a Google product, it is just a tool for Google to collect data. If they manage to collect data via Apple Intelligence they are going to do it. Regardless of what Apple marketing says.

To be honest, I wish Thunderbird would become part of LibreOffice, to become a real contender to MS Outlook/MS Office.

Mozilla is managing Thunderbird as a second class citizen since way too long.

Rust/Loco is unironically the most interesting framework right now.

Loco follows up the Rails formula pretty closely, and makes easier to learn Rust by taking care of a load of boilerplate code.

I am keeping Facebook just because of a couple of Groups.

Meta is supposed to know me, I use Instagram quite a bit (following F1 teams, some comedians and a bunch of tiktok-style content creators), but somehow this does not translate in targeting on FB, just generic targeting for my population type.

The point is that Google is harming paying customers, and as a paying customer Proton respects me more and it is based in Europe, which is a big plus for me.

I already started to move most of my communications to ProtonMail. Looks like Google wants to force people to use the WebUI instead of email clients (no google ads on IMAP/POP).

The main issue of GNUStep was that, when KDE appeared, the GNU project used GTK+ as a base for GNOME, instead of GNUStep. This basically killed the momentum behind GNUStep as a base for the official GNU Desktop. It is sad because GNUStep is incredible, the IDEs alone are more advanced than anything in GNOME-space, even today. Oh well...

Bluesky is not a real decentralized system as the company behind it say. Bluesky (the company) controls most key parts of the network, and it is basically impossible to setup a really decentralised alternative provider for the ATProto network, like you can do today with ActivityPub (Mastodon) or Nostr.

Sure, you can setup you PDS and own your data, but it is useless without the Relays and a self-hosted Firehose, and running you own website is basically impossible.

And lastly, let's keep in mind that BSky is a commercial entity, not a no-profit like Mastodon or a commmunity effort like Nostr.

And yes, I am ignoring the political toxicity of the network because I think the technical aspects are bad enough.
