Unrelated but fun story about antagonists and undersea cables that I saw in some Cold War history book in college.
The CIA had cooked up a bonkers covert mission to send a submarine with an airlock right into the soviets’ top submarine harbor. There, divers were to place a tap an underwater data cable that fed the nearby submarine base—a crown jewel of Soviet sub deployment intel.
The CIA knew the cable passed through the harbor somewhere. But where?
To search the entire harbor for a tiny cable would have taken too long. The mission planners were stuck on this problem until one day one of the CIA planners is out on his personal boat. He sees a sign that says “WARNING: Undersea Cable” and has a moment of clarity.
They brought a translator, popped up the periscope in the Soviet harbor, and spotted an equivalent sign which they used to carry out the mission successfully.
For extra credit they had to go back to exfiltrate the data if my memory serves.

Where I’m from in southern USA, there are 65mph state highways with 4 way traffic light intersections. Actually, pretty much every Amazon FC (at least in North America) has free coffee machines in the breakrooms. Some FCs have really bad coffee, but it is there and it is free. It used to cost money at some sites (to pay for the vending machine) but based on associate feedback it is now broad policy to be free.
I work in a corp office where the coffee is far worse than many FCs I've been to.

In much the same way Amazon has a head start on other e-commerce firms, UPS has on Amazon. They have been customer-obsessed in one of the hardest spaces (Meatspace logistics) for literally 111 years. This kind of thing is extremely difficult to get right, and Amazon has a long, long way to go before they can compete with UPS.
UPS is enthusiastic about working with Amazon, but Fedex is not. Simple as that. Fedex is a gap-filling option within Amazon.

There are many raspberry pi projects on reddit for the "microgrowery" community... I recommend having a search. I plan to set up an indoor tomato and herb garden using these methods.
For solenoids, I advise some methods like [1] so that you can connect a cheap and daisy-chainable relay board like [2] via SPI. Then you can control anything.
If you don't want to get down into the 5v to 3.3v mumbo jumbo, it may be easiest to connect an arduino or clone via USB to the raspberry pi. There are bazillions of documented ways to drive relays with an arduino.

I had one of these on my commute in Atlanta for a while. (Left turn) It was impossible to read the sign unless you came to a stop, at which point a cacophony of honking emerged from behind, whether it was the right time or not.
At some point they added a little yellow light to indicate it was legal to turn. I was a little awestruck.
The reddit AMA author seems to have worked at a ‘traditional’ FC where there are miles of bookshelf or pallet style storage. In this layout it is difficult to place optimized restrooms as one pick worker may cover half of a million sqft building in a shift.
Newer, robotized FCs have much more tightly packed, human-inaccessible storage zones and have restrooms a reasonable distance from static pick workstations.
