In my experience, people working remote are often in the same timezone or even in the same area. Thus, they can easily come to the office if needed. They often share the same working habits, the same culture of communication and they speak the same language. This does not alway apply to offshoring.

I'm working remote (on and off) since 2012, mostly in the same timezone. I never felt the danger of being replaced by someone in a cheaper country.

Perhaps the problem with offshoring is not just the fact that the people are working remote. What about (very) different timezones, different working culture, different culture of communication etc.?

In my experience the Elterngeld usually replaces one income in a double income family. Of course one will "loose" money if the cap hits, but hey its 1800 EUR per month for up to 14 months just for being a parent. I think it is awesome even if it is just 30% of your regular salary.

I think you should add people working in the health-care sector.

I was a junior back then but COM felt like magic to me. I think MS made COM more arcane than necessary. It was not until I read the book Essential COM by Don Box that I understood COM.

Where in the EU are you? I'm 43, living in Berlin and working as a software engineer. From what I can tell there is not much age bias here. Some German companies I know have an average age beyond 45 in dev teams.

I even interviewed with a FAANG for a Berlin-based engineering position 2 years ago but canceled the process myself. Being over 40 did not seem to be an issue at all.

According to the German Wikipedia article every Dutch person is required by law to have a "legally defined" healthcare contract. Sounds quite different to the US system.

German here. Several of my colleagues are from India. As far as I know they are quite happy here. One of my former managers is from India. So You can make a career here.

From what I can see, salaries are diverse. It is possible make decent money even in Berlin. English is usually not a problem in Berlin. In some companies English is default. Knowing a bit of German helps of course.

Consider Hamburg too, salaries are better there and it is more secure.

Honest question: how should people seeking to enter the market behave in such a situation?

I think the caller would care. I never got a robocall. I think it is because B2C cold calls without customer consent are illegal in Germany.

This sounds kinda scary. I don't want to have a racist or a misogynist in my team or company but this seems to go way too far.

If China starts selling global assets, like housing in major cities around the world, and starts to decline their treasury holding rather than rolling them, then look out.

Serious question, what would happen if they do this? Do you mean it could result in a decline of housing prices?
